The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed and gone into effect in January of 1863. However, it was not until this day, 159 years ago, on June 19, 1865, the Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce to more than 250,000 slaves in Texas that they were, in fact, free.

While my patrilineal line traces back to a well known plantation in Alabama, this is obviously still a special, and somewhat emotional day for myself and many other Americans. Obviously the assassination of President Lincoln threw a helluva wrench in the reconstruction and integration efforts that most would agree are still felt today. Still, this was a giant step toward all Americans enjoying the rights that were said to be unalienable to all men.

Enjoy the day, and Hook ‘em!
