Late Sunday afternoon, following reports that Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman made four big changes with his coaching staff, the school confirmed those moves and released a statement from Herman.
“After taking time, looking back and evaluating the season in its totality, I am very disappointed in our performance in a number of areas in 2019,” Herman said. “7-5 will never be our standard at Texas and I take full responsibility for any and all of our shortcomings and know we need to do a better job coaching across the board. With that said, I do believe the future is very bright, have decided to make some changes to our staff as we head into bowl preparation and look to finish strong in the final weeks of fall recruiting.”
Defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach Drew Mehringer were both relieved of their duties and will no longer remain with the staff, while wide receivers coach Corby Meekins was relieved of his duties and reassigned to an administrative role.
Herman also removed Tim Beck from his offensive coordinator role, but he will continue to serve as the quarterbacks coach for the Longhorns for the bowl game.
“I’m truly grateful for everything Todd, Drew and Corby have done, not only for us here at Texas, but in building the program at Houston, as well,” Herman said. “These were very difficult decisions and certainly not an indictment of them as coaches, I just believe we need a fresh set of eyes and infusion of new ideas and energy to help us grow across the board.”
Texas will now begin a national search for Orlando’s replacement while co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Craig Naivar takes over as the defensive play caller for the bowl game.
With the changes to the coaching staff, Director of Recruiting Bryan Carrington will join the on-field coaching staff on an interim basis so that he can go on the road to firm up the 2020 and 2021 commits and work on finalizing the additions to the current cycle.
Offensive analyst Andre Coleman and defensive analyst Jeremiah George will also join the on-field assistants for the bowl game — Coleman will serve as the interim wide receivers coach and George will serve as the interim linebackers coach.
