I did a quick check-in this morning, and it appears all of Texas’ early enrollees are on campus and officially members of the Longhorn football program.
Freshman quarterback Shane Buechele, linebacker Demarco Boyd, receiver Collin Johnson and offensive lineman Zach Shackelford are currently on campus as Tuesday marks the first day of classes for UT students. We did not doubt any of those players would show up, but you always want to make sure there were not any last minute hiccups.
In addition, we are still vetting possible candidates to replace running backs coach Tommie Robinson, who recently decided to leave for USC. Here is what I know so far.
- Feel free to scratch Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire off your wish list. From what I have been told, McGuire is still not interested in leaving his position to pursue a college opportunity. McGuire is happy at Cedar Hill, and his son is just a junior in high school. McGuire intends to remain at Cedar Hill until his son graduates from high school.
- On the flip side, I have been told former Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley would be interested in the job if offered. Locksley is the father to redshirt freshman quarterback Kai Locksley, and has the reputation of being a top-notch recruiter. Locksley served as Maryland’s interim coach for the final six games of last season after head coach Randy Edsall was fired. Before Edsall's firing, Locksley served as Maryland's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since joining the team in 2012.
- In addition, keep an eye on Utah State receivers coach Luke Wells. We heard Wells’ name when Gilbert interviewed for the job, and his popped up again last night as a potential staff addition.
As always, we will update you when more news is available.
