Regardless of your political leanings it should be obvious to you that this will not end well for Comey. Maybe not in a legal sense, although that is possible. But in the court of public opinion he has totally screwed himself as far as any respected legacy is concerned. Oh, the liberal faction will keep patting him on the back if for nothing other than poking sharp sticks at Donald Trump, but when the political value of that wanes they will turn against him. If nothing more than the churlish book he wrote and the tabloid tour of tacky talk show circuit he is showing up on regularly he has pretty much cemented his place in history as something of an ass clown who grossly mishandled his position as FBI Director. While he tries to preserve some imagined image of a faithful servant wronged the fact is he allowed himself to commit the cardinal sin of his office and his bureau. He allowed himself to become politicized. And after that began to go bad for him based on an unfortunate election outcome calculus he began to double down in fruitless attempts to justify his actions. Then he allowed himself to get entangled in a silly tit-for-tat with the POTUS that bordered on schoolyard behavior – by both of them. Had he simply done his job with fairness and dignity becoming the office he held he would not be in the position he is in – trying desperately to re-establish some semblance of dignity in his own exit. He can’t undo the mistakes he has made. But maybe he should heed the sage advice of Pogo.
