Hung out with Bill Bates last night

Very cool. Loved him as a player. Seems like a genuinely good dude. Glad to hear it’s the case.

Used to love that guy. He was tough. I remember they even tried him on punt returns to take advantage of that toughness by just catching and running north. It didn’t work out that well because I remember he got injured doing it.

He was anything but fast.

Dude ran a 4.8 at the combine. But he had a heart like a V8 engine. Would not quit. Dude just out worked everybody else. @LonghornMM you get my pics?

Was away from my computer. Bill Bates was one of my favorite Cowboys ever. The guy was tough as nails and would knock guys into tomorrow! Great pics, clob!

I believe I had a Cowboys football signed by him and another guy. Gave it to my grandma.

Bill Bates is the epitome of what a Dallas Cowboy was. He should be in the Ring of Honor. I thought he was having CTE issues?

Growing up a Cowboys fan in the 80's and 90's Bill Bates was an icon of the Dallas Cowboys in that time period. Even though his role was really small he still had a lot of impact on the team in that time period.

Dementia. But I caught him on what appeared to be a good night. He had some stories, we laughed about how the cowboys have sucked ass since his era ended. We talked some fishing. Classy dude, and his wife was a fvcking sweetheart.

Where did you run into him at?
Valley Smoke BBQ in Ponte Vedra just outside TPC Sawgrass where I was staying (humble brag alert).

The Q there was what you'd expect. I had ribs and brisket with Mac n cheese and beans. Total convection oven bbq...... ya the ribs were tender but had that cherry glaze stuff on them and you couldn't taste any smoke. The brisket was dry, the Mac was on point though.

Check it out-- 2 little baby back ribs, a slice of brisket = 22 bucks.

Well, that's Florida BBQ for you, lol. It ain't Texas. ;)

Whenever I think of the cowboys, I think of Michael Irvin and Hollywood Henderson.

Lol! Not sure if some of the young uns get it. Nonetheless, most people think of dynasties and superbowls.

When I think of the Cowboys, I think of Meredith, Staubach, Lilly, Pearson, Dorsett, Newhouse, Landry, Waters, Harris, R. White, Too Tall, Martin, Bates, Walls, Garrison, DuPree, Aikman, Irvin, E. Smith, Moose, Woodson, Lett, Allen, Stepnoski, J. Johnson, Novacek, Witten, Ware, Romo, Bryant.

Oh, imo Bill Bates was integral for those great cowboy teams of the 80's and 90's. Blue collar guy. Integral. My kinda guy. The NFL has done come a long long ways involving the players like Bill Bates. 👍

What guys like Bill Bates, John Lynch, Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, etc. did to guys back in the day wouldn't fly in today's watered down NFL. They may as well put a skirt on guys these days.

With all the studies coming out about CTE it's kind of a good thing with all these new rules they are implementing.

Went to junior high in Dallas in the late 60s. Lived down the street from Tom Landry and was classmates with a kid whose Big Brother was Lance Rentzel. The lucky little sh^t tagged along on a few dates with Lance and Joey Heatherton. Too bad Rentzel couldn’t keep it in his pants. He was a gifted receiver.

Speaking of Bates, here's a video from 1985 that just shows the Oilers offense vs the Cowboys defense the whole video. I think this was Bates 2nd year in the league if I recall. They really put it on Warren Moon but it looked like he just had Drew Hill back then I guess Ernest Givens and Jeffires came along a few years later. Anyway watching this video brought back alot of memories and I remember all of those defensive guys on this Cowboys squad like it was yesterday.

Moon had a cannon. You can easily see that. He also had no weapons. Turn back time and give Moon players like Earl, and Jeffries, and Givens, and the Oilers kill it fir 5-6 years.

Saw an interview with him one time discussing his rookie year, he said they were in practice and like others have said about him, he had one speed and that was flat out hustle and full bore, well he was all wound up on a play and said he flat out hammered Tony Dorsett when he was supposed to be basically no contact. He said Landry, Dorsett etc. weren't happy about it.

First special teamer to make the Probowl.

Warren Moon was such an underrated QB from the past. I still can’t believe they blew that 35-3 lead in 92. I think they probably win the Super Bowl that year if not for that.
