While most of the excitement heading down the home stretch of the recruiting season surrounds those prospects who have yet to commit, Texas head coach Charlie Strong has been busy the past couple weeks keeping one eye on his current group of commitments.
For instance, on Sunday afternoon, as players were leaving the UT campus following their unofficial visits, Strong immediately boarded a plane and made his way to Louisiana to check on several recruiting, including Texas defensive tackle commitment Gerald Wilbon.
The visit to Wilbon's house completed a whirlwind day for Strong and assistant coaches Brick Haley, Jeff Traylor and Sterlin Gilbert, who also saw fellow UT commitment Peyton Aucoin and target Stephon Taylor on Sunday evening.
For Wilbon, who took his official visit to Texas earlier this month and is 100 percent solid with his commitment, it was a good chance to get more comfortable around his future coaches.
"It was great, being able to connect with them and talk to them," Wilbon said. "It makes me feel way more comfortable with my situation. I can just go about it with them. It was really great."
With the in-home visit in the books and National Signing Day now less than a week away, Wilbon has officially shut down the recruiting process. The only thing left for the 6-3, 305-pound standout is to sign his letter of intent and fax it in on Wednesday morning.
"I'm ready," Wilbon said. "I've been waiting on this for a while."
The Desterhan (La.) product committed to Texas way back in June. Texas was the only school Wilbon visited and he said he's still excited about his decision. The only person more thrilled may be his mother.
"Everybody is excited. Everybody knows how good a school UT is," Wilbon said. "My mom said if I don't sign the scholarship, she'll sign my scholarship for me and send it in."
Looking back at his choice, Wilbon said it was something that just felt right in his heart. He's felt comfortable with Texas all along and now is looking forward to officially joining the Longhorn program.
"I kind of had this gut feeling. When I went to the campus a couple weeks before I committed, I loved it a lot," Wilbon said. "I was thinking about it for a while. I just decided to do it and didn't ever have any second thoughts."
