This filibuster paves the way for Ginsburg to be replaced with a conservative should she be replaced within the next 3 years. The nuclear option likely fails (a few R's would vote against the rules change) if a Gorsuch clone is tapped to replace Ginsburg rather than Scalia. The Democrats made a big mistake here in my view.
The other side of the argument is that this keeps their base mobilized. I think the downside outweighs the upside for the D's particularly when you consider that the R's are likely to gain a couple of seats in the midterms.
