Tight end Irvin Smith has been committed to Texas A&M since June. He remains committed, but is also keeping the door open a bit, including taking other visits.
With a talent like Smith's, coaches have been drawn to him like sharks to blood in the water.
Smith took his official visit to Texas A&M in October. He took an official visit to Texas in December. This weekend, he'll take an official visit to Memphis and will follow that up with an official visit to Alabama on January 22. On January 29, he'll either visit LSU or Florida.
On Thursday night, in an effort to solidify their standing, A&M will send a large group of coaches to Irvin's house, including Kevin Sumlin, Noel Mazzone, Jeff Banks and Aaron Moorehead.
"I'm just going in there with an open mind. Meeting the coach (Mazzone) for the first time, I just want to see how our relationship goes, see how everything shakes out."
The Texas Longhorns have been in Smith's ear for a while and the two parties have remained on steady contact. Smith communicates with UT tight ends coach Jeff Traylor and head coach Charlie Strong regularly and in looking back at his December UT official visit, the New Orleans Brother Martin product said it was a good experience.
"I'm definitely strong about Texas. They're one of my top schools still. I never had gone before, that was my first time," Smith said. "I really enjoyed it. All the coaches and everything at Texas, I feel like I have a good relationship with all of them.
During his Texas visit, Smith got a chance to meet new Texas offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert, who was introduced as a UT coach on the weekend of Smith's official visit. Gilbert stressed to Smith during their conversations that Texas needs a player with his ability to make plays in the passing game, and Smith would be heavily utilized in Gilbert's offense.
So how close is this race heading down the stretch?
"It's pretty close. But right now I'm still solidly committed to Texas A&M," Smith said.
