The tight end position is one of the biggest recruiting needs for the Texas Longhorns, and on Friday afternoon Texas took a big step towards filling its needs.

Lake Travis tight end Cade Brewer, who had previously been committed to SMU, has flipped his commitment to Texas.

The decision for Brewer comes nearly three weeks after Texas offered the 6-3, 220-pound Brewer. This week, Brewer had been mulling over his options and discussion his choices with his family, and on Friday he decided to make it official and join the Texas commitment list.

“With Texas, it’s just the tradition they have there at the University of Texas and how close it is to home," Brewer said earlier this week. "It’s probably the bigger conference and just coach (Tom) Herman, how he’s done over the years at Houston. I would say those are the biggest factors.”

Brewer actually committed to SMU back in April and remained solid with his pledge despite numerous other offers from programs like Oklahoma and Texas A&M. When Texas offered on December 4, the standout pass-catcher said he would consider the offer and he eventually took an unofficial visit to UT just prior to the start of the recruiting dead period.

Brewer has stayed in close contact with the Texas staff in recent weeks, particularly tight end coach Corby Meekins, as he worked towards his decision. His longstanding relationship with SMU head coach Chad Morris made for a tough decision, but he ultimately decided the opportunity to play at Texas was one he couldn't pass up.

Brewer is ranked as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com. He caught 62 passes for 813 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior.
