Never know who shows up but Okie St and TCU are looming. Maybe this let the air out of the big heads and shows we have a ton of things to clean up on both sides of the ball. Ugly win definitely better than a loss but dang we got to get off the field on 3rd down more consistently!

I’m really worried about TCU, OSU, and KSU. All 3 have good running QBs. We can stop half ass running QBs.

But if we play like we did against OU and Bama we won’t lose again
The OU game doesn’t even count lol. They had no resemblance of a QB. This defense hasn’t come anywhere close to replicating that Bama performance. On top of that PK’s scheme is complete garbage. I don’t trust this defense at all.

I’m not saying the defense is great, or that PK is the greatest DC in the world. Neither are true, but I feel like some of the hate on the defense is because people came in to the season hating PK so your looking for reasons to hate him. The reality is the defense regardless of who the DC is Texas doesn’t haven’t the jimmy’s or joes yet to be a great defense yet. They have better talent than last year. It’s not there yet though.

last year we would KILL for a win like this....we won ugly

but we won..

Defense will figure it out..i expect this to be a wake up call and to stop reading the medias fluff job articles and just play ball.
Eh I think fans, media and coaches in press conferences talk about players reading the media and believing the hype(the “rat poison”) more than they actually do. Reality is Iowa state has lost some close games this year. They have a good defense, have a couple players on offense they can give you issues, and they did today.

I feel like we have been saying for the last 10 years we don’t have the jimmys and joes. And PK’s scheme is garbage. That is never going to change.

They are about to play some really good offenses these next couple of games and they are about to get exposed even more is what I’m afraid of. The good thing is we have an offense that can score and keep us in game.

We’ve been saying it for the last 10 years because it’s been true for 10 years. Go look at the NFL draft. I’ve always said you could not watch a down of college football, and tune in to the first two days of the NFL draft and you’d have a pretty good idea of who had a good year in college football… how many longhorns have been drafted in the first 3 rounds of the draft the last decade? Not many.

we have those guys on offense right now… don’t have many on defense yet.

We are 14th in active players on NFL rosters. That’s a pretty good number. More than any other Big 12 school besides OU. We have had 11 defensive players drafted since 2015. Nowhere near as bad as you’re making it seem.

To illustrate what I’m talking about a little bit more when PK was at UW he coached guys like Vita Vea, Budda Baker, Marcus Peters, Shaq Thompson…. We got any dudes like that on this defense? Probably not. We have a few good players… no great players

We have a lot of guys in the NFL. None of them are more than sold contributors and very few of them were high draft picks(3 of them are kickers currently. I’m not knocking those guys but If you are going to be championship level you better have multiple 1-3 round type players. We have some of those guys on offense. Not so much on defense.

Look at teams like Iowa State this year or Oklahoma State last year. Neither of those defenses had high round talent NFL guys but both were and are damn good defenses.

I don’t feel like our defensive staff is doing the best job of putting guys in place to succeed. You don’t have to have NFL talent all over the field in the Big 12 to have a successful defense. That’s been proven a bunch in this conference.

You may not have to have NFL guys all over the field, but you have to have play makers… we don’t have any really on defense. Who is the Xavier worthy of the defense? The guy that’s gonna fly in to make a play? The short answer is we don’t have one.

I look at it this way. We’ve been through countless coordinators over the last decade, each coach came with success prior, many had success after Texas. It can’t always be the coach

I'm very concerned about OSU and TCU. Both of them would have beat Texas today.
K State worries me as well. Running QBs have been our kryptonite. The good thing is that Iowa State is the best defense we will face for the rest of the year. I think if our defense plays like they did today the rest of the season we are looking at 2-3 more losses.

What defensive coordinator that has been here the last decade has left Texas and had success?

Todd Orland improved the USC defense from the year before he took over. His defense was good here too when he had sole talent oh that side of the hall

BTW Texas is giving up 18 points a game compared to 30 points a game at this point last year, and giving up almost 100 fewer yards per game. Obviously the defense isn’t perfect we need to continue to upgrade talent on that side of the ball, but the defense is improved by all objective measures.

PFF: “Texas' Kelvin Banks Jr.: The left tackle takes home True Freshman of the Week honors for the second consecutive week and is piecing together one of the best true freshman campaigns PFF has ever seen.”

This is gas! This young man has been amazing and isn't getting enough credit.. Notice how everyone now just assumes he's going to dominate his man week in and week out? Let's not take him for granted. He's a big reason why Quinn, Bijan and the rest of our playmakers are having strong seasons.

Offensive line really started to come together the last 2 weeks. They manhandled Iowa State's defensive line in the 2nd half of that game. If they can continue to run the ball like they did against Iowa State then this offense is going to have a lot of success. It feels so good to finally have a good offensive line here again. Been a long time since we have seen that.
