Jonathan Joss of ‘King of the Hill,’ ‘Parks and Rec’ killed in San Antonio shooting
SAN ANTONIO – Jonathan Joss, a voice actor in “King Of The Hill” and “Parks and Recreation,” was shot and killed at his San Antonio property on Sunday, police said.
The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Dorsey Drive near Pleasanton Road on the South Side, the site of where his home burned back in January.
A preliminary report from San Antonio police states that when officers arrived, they found Joss, 59, shot near the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers detained Sigfredo Ceja Alvaraez, 56, and transported him to police headquarters for questioning, the report states.
Alvaraez was later arrested on a murder charge, police said. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
Joss was featured in many television shows and movies, including the voice behind John Redcorn in “King of the Hill” from seasons 2 to 13.
Joss reportedly had a “meltdown” during a reunion with his co-stars at Austin’s ATX TV Festival on Friday, according to a thread on Reddit. Reddit users said Joss rambled and interrupted the panel, and he said that his house burned down because he was gay.
Fans shared their support for Joss — and later their condolences — in the thread.
The revival of “King of the Hill” is set to premiere with its 14th season on Aug. 4 on Hulu.
Joss also played Chief Ken Hotate in “Parks and Recreation” and appeared in the 2010 Coen Brothers’ film “True Grit.”
Firefighters were able to knock down the flames, but not before it burned the home, a vehicle in the carport and two dogs, Joss told a KSAT crew at the scene.
“This is a house I grew up in. I’m more concerned about my dog that died, but you know what? The good Lord will protect us,” Joss told KSAT.
Joss said his father built the home for his mother in 1957.
Joss told KSAT he had issues with electricity after the home was vandalized, and had to stay in a hotel to keep warm.
“But the last couple of nights, I want(ed) to come home and take care of my dogs” due to cold weather, he told KSAT.
Joss said he left the house to eat and thought he had turned everything off. He said he had been using a propane heater in the home for warmth.
“I don’t have a job. I don’t have children. I’m missing one more dog ... I don’t have a place to stay,” Joss said at the time.
On Monday, neighbors told KSAT that he had stopped by the property on Monday to check on it and pick up his mail.
