There was a time early in the recruiting process when it looked to be a near certainty that offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez would be a Texas Longhorn.
It took a lot longer than expected, but on Saturday afternoon, Urquidez did in fact commit to the University of Texas.
After originally signing with Baylor as part of the Bears’ 2016 recruiting class, Urquidez requested to be released from his National Letter of Intent following the sexual assault scandal that rocked the Baylor program. Urquidez’s request, along with four other prospects, was granted by Baylor on Thursday afternoon.
On Saturday, Urquidez made his way to Austin for a visit and wasted little time in adding his name to the UT commitment list.
The 6-7, 300-pound Urquidez becomes the second player from Baylor’s 2016 commitment haul to flip to the Longhorns. He joins Rivals100 wide receiver Donovan Duvernay, who committed to Texas on Wednesday. Duvernay, technically, was never part of Baylor’s recruiting class because of a clerical error with his LOI.
A Rivals250 member, Urquidez held offers from the likes of Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska and Oklahoma, among others. He becomes the Longhorns 26th commitment in the 2016 recruiting class and is UT’s fifth offensive line signee. He’ll enroll at Texas for the second summer session in early July.
