If anyone needs some football to hold them over these next few weeks, check out the Last Chance U series on Netflix. A behind the scenes look at one of the most successful Juco programs in the country featuring a hot head head coach, a saint of an academic advisor, and a team composed of players with troubled pasts looking for a future at a big time program.
For those who have watched it, I'm interested on your takes. A few of mine:
(SPOILER ALERT BELOW)
1. People like Brittany Wagner are what this world needs. Truly a selfless individual, doing everything she can to help these young men make something of themselves. Probably more than anyone else on the show, she really loves these kids. If you ever want to help someone, they have to know that you care about them first. I wish her the best in her new endeavour as a consultant with her company, 10 thousand pencils.
2. I think we all knew this already, but Lane Kiffin is making FAU the EMCC of the NCAA. He added Clint Trickett to his staff (good move) and also has several players on his squad from EMCC. Season 2 QB De'Andre Johnson and Season 1 QB John Franklin III are both headed to Boca Raton, along with DE Tim Bonner. De'Andre lost his FSU spot after punching a young woman at a bar but based on his portrayal in LCU he seems to have matured from that and I think he could be a great player. Bonner also has a good chance to be successful. John Franklin on the other hand went from EMCC to Aub but after not winning the starting spot, announced his transfer. This kid is full of entitlement.
3. It is tough watching some of these talented young men squander opportunities. The show does a really good job of delving into their backgrounds, and I think that explains a lot of the struggles they have, but it is frustrating. You want to see these young men do well, and it's easy to see the opportunities they have, but they just can't seem to do what they need to do. Some are talented enough to get by, like Kam Carter who landed at Pitt but he could have done even better for himself. Isaiah Wright's story is the toughest. Young man raised in the foster system who has immense talent but struggles with injuries and attitude and signed with West Georgia. He left the team after spring ball.
4. Coach Wood is a dang good coach and also shows a lot of care for his players. He put an explosive offense on the field and it's a shame he isn't still coaching due to the temper of Coach Stephens.
5. Speaking of Stephens, he seemed to be doing a better job of keeping his cool at the beginning of the season but that really spiraled quick near the end. The low point being when he personally attacked coach Wood on the sideline during the game, making mention of his ex-wife. Stephens seemed to be changed externally but his inner man never changed. That was one of the lowest things I have ever seen someone do, especially to a loyal friend and co-worker.
6. Dakota Allen is a great redemption story that we might see on the field this fall. He was expelled from Texas Tech for armed robbery (charges were dropped) after his freshmen year. At EMCC he was a model citizen, got baptized and had another great year on the field. Tech has allowed him to return and he has been lauded as a leader for the team since returning. I'm not sure where his place is on the depth chart, but he will definitely be a name a keep a lookout for when we play them.
That's enough from me, what do yall think?
