5/31/1938- Singer/songwriter Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary is born in NYC.


5/31/1940- Musician and Texas legend Augie Meyers is born in San Antonio. He was a member of the Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados.


6/2/1941- Charlie Watts is born in London.


5/28/1944- Gladys Knight is born in Atlanta.


6/2/1944- Composer and Conductor Marvin Hamlisch is born in NYC. He is EGOT winner who scored “They way we were”, the original theme for “Good Morning America” and this James Bond classic…


5/28/1945- John Fogerty is born outside San Francisco.


6/1/1947- Guitarist Ronnie Wood of The Faces and The Rolling Stones is born in London.


5/31/1948- John Bonham is born in England. Many say he is still the finest drummer that ever lived.


6/1/1948- Blues Harmonica player Sonny Boy Williamson dies in Chicago.

6/1/1950- Musician Graham Russell of Air Supply is born in England.


6/1/1953- Country musician Ronnie Dunn is born outside Brownwood.


5/30/1955- Topper Headon, drummer for The Clash is born in England.


5/27/1957- Buddy Holly & the Crickets release their 1st single that would also become the only no. 1 in their short time. It was inspired by John Wayne in the film “The Searches.” It would hit no. 1 in the U.S. an the UK.


They also recorded “Everyday” and “Not Fade Away”, the latter becoming the Rolling Stones’ 1st U.S. single in 1964.

6/1/1957- Sam Cooke records his debut single “You send me”, it would later reach no. 1 on both the R&B and Pop charts.


5/27/1958- Singer/songwriter Neil Finn in New Zealand. He would front the new wave band Split Enz and Crowded House.


6/1/1959- Keyboardist Alan Wilder of Depeche Mode is born in London. Here is his piano calling card...


Johnny Horton’s “The Battle of New Orleans” hits no. 1 on the U.S. Pop and also Country charts, where it would remain for 2 months.


6/1/1960- The Cure’s ace bassist Simon Gallup is born outside London.


5/29/1961 Melissa Etheridge is born in Kansas.


5/27/1962- “Moon River” from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s wins the Grammy for both Record and Song of the Year.


6/2/1962- Ray Charles begins a 5-week run at no. 1 on the U.S. charts with his single “I can’t stop loving you.”


5/27/1963- Bob Dylan release his smash album “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.” It included folk standards such as “Blowin in the wind”, “A hard rains gonna fall” and “Don’t think twice.”


6/1/1963- 16-year-old Lesley Gore tops the U.S. charts with “Its my party.”

5/30/1964- Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave is born in NYC.


Wynona Judd is born in Kentucky.


5/31/1964- Daryl Mc Daniels, Rap pioneer and member of the trio RUN-DMC is born in Hollis.
