While most of today’s focus has been on high school recruiting, Texas also has landed a key addition from the transfer portal with a commitment from Wake Forest transfer Gavin Holmes.

Holmes, out of New Orleans Rummel High School in the 2020 class, took an official visit to Texas last weekend and got a chance to see how he’d fit in with the UT staff and the Longhorns’ defensive scheme.

Along with Texas, Holmes had fielded offers from the likes of Penn State, Cincinnati, Mississippi State, Oregon State, West Virginia, Baylor, Washington, Ole Miss, Kansas, Houston, Tulane, Virginia Tech and Arkansas. He had tentatively planned a Penn State visit prior to committing to Texas.

Holmes told OB that he was excited to hear from Terry Joseph about how he could be featured in the Texas defense, including the opportunity to replace D’Shawn Jamison. No promises of playing time have been given, but Holmes said he’s been told he’ll be given every opportunity to come in and compete.

Holmes will enroll at Texas in January. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
