Women's 4x100M relay round 1- Morolake Akinosun, USA
akinosun_morolake_2015.jpg

Update: After a very bizarre series of events, USA with re-race tonight at 5pm.
On the second handoff of the relay, Allyson Felix seemed to drop the baton trying to hand it to English Gardner. Upon replay, it seems the runner waiting for the baton in the next lane (Brazil) lined up too close to the edge of the lane and hit Felix with her elbow as she took off. This hit threw Felix off, which caused her to flail the baton at Gardner. The US picked the baton up and finished the race despite the obvious error.

After review, the Brazilian team was disqualified. It is illegal to lineup as that runner did. This is something I have never seen before. It was seemingly a freak accident. The US team filed an appeal based on the grounds that the Brazilian runner messed them up causing them to do badly. The US team finished about a minute after everyone else.

The Jury of Appeal made a decision that shocked me: They are allowing the US to re-do their relay. The US will run again at 5pm with the same lineup with Akinosun as the anchor.
The US has to run faster than 42.70 to make the final.

Both Canada and China ran a 42.70, which would mean if the US ran faster, China and Canada would have to re-race. The judges then broke down China and Canada's times to 1/1000th of a second to get a clear leader. Canada is now in 7th and China is in 8th.
Some of you may wonder why Simone Manuel had to share the gold after swimming the same time as someone else. The reason is that swimming and track are two different federations with different rules. Swimming allows for ties, track does not.

If the US beats the 42.70, they will advance.
This is simply bizarre.

11am- Women's Volleyball
USA v. Serbia Semifinal- Rachael Adams, USA
Update: Serbia upsets USA 3-2
Adams with a great game in the tough loss with 14 points, 6 blocks, and 8 spikes.
This was a very surprising upset, but it was a hard fought game.
USA will face the loser of China-Netherlands in the bronze medal match. Serbia advances to final.

4:35pm- Track and Field
4x100 re-do- Morolake Akinosun, USA
Update: USA runs 41.77 to advance.
The relay team runs the fastest qualifying time to advance to tomorrow's final.

Men's shot put final- Ryan Crouser, USA
Update: Crouser wins gold and sets record!
An amazing performance by Crouser. He set a new personal record on his second throw, 22.22M, which is the new 15th best time all-time worldwide. In round three, he got a new PR with 22.26M, now 14th all-time worldwide. Crouser was in the lead heading into the fifth round.
On his fifth throw, Crouser set the new Olympic record with a mark of 22.52M!!!! The previous record was 22.47M. On the sixth and last throw, second place Joe Kovacs was short of Crouser's new record. Crouser threw one last time for fun; the gold was already his.
Texas sweeps the shot put with Michelle Carter winning for the women and Crouser winning for the men.

Women's 400M hurdles final- Ashley Spencer, USA
Update: Spencer wins bronze!
After falling behind in the race, Spencer catches up on the last hurdle and takes off to get bronze in 53.72! She was in 6th place heading into the last hurdle. Congrats to her on her first Olympics!

Update: USA finishes first by huge margin
Okolo ran a huge first leg, which gave the US a lead they never lost. USA runs a 3:21.42. Second place Ukraine finished three seconds later. Incredible race.

Update: Jamaica finishes first in their heat
Gordon ran the third leg and gave Jamaica a huge lead, about 30M. They held the league in the anchor leg and won in a time of 3:22.28, two seconds ahead of second place.

USA and Jamaica with two fastest times. Will be a battle between the two tomorrow in the final.

Women's 4x100M relay final- Morolake Akinosun, USA
Update: USA wins gold!
Akinosun did not run in the relay, but she will get a gold medal for being on the qualifying team. The women won in 41.01. Second place Jamaica finished in 41.36. And bronze went to Great Britain in 41.77. Congrats to Morolake on her first Olympics!

Longhorn fun fact: Kerron Clement, who won gold in the men's 400M hurdles, was coached by Texas Ex Michael Mosley in high school. On his website, Clement thanks Mosley for "believing in my talent and seeing the gift that I could not have seen at that moment in my life." What starts here coaches gold medalists!
