I've always felt that last year TCU came in under the radar. Last summer all anyone was talking about was Baylor and Oklahoma. TCU was 4-8. But in came Sonny Cumbie and Doug Meacham and they revamped the TCU offense to make the most of Trevone Boykin's talent and uncover the hidden talent on offense and the rest is history. But the biggest thing was relatively few injuries. Their string lineup was pretty much intact the whole season.
But the law of averages caught up with them this season. From the first game they were riddled with injuries. Imo, Gary Patterson is the best dc in college fb. How many hc's at as their own dc? That's not unusual with oc's but he is the only hc I know of that is his own dc. He makes the game plan, calls the defenses and makes the adjustments. The results speak for themselves. There was a time in fb when the best athletes played on defense. This was especially true in TX both hs and college. It was like that in the Royal and Akers era. It's the opposite now. But GP is a throwback. Last year he took a receiver, turned him into a lb, and the kid was a first team AA and is now playing in the NFL. And he does this on a regular basis. Like I said a throwback. But as good as he is when you have to start a lot of freshman on defense like TCdid the results are going to be bad. In a way both UT & TCU's defenses were like that this year.
But TCU had Trevone Boykin, Josh Doctson, and Aaron Green. The three of them saved them at KSU and TT. Both games were shootouts that were won in the final seconds. TB averaged 400 yards of total offense, JD accounted for 47% of their receiving, and AG was more than 50% of their running game. But only AG page the whole season. They had to work very hard to finish 10-2.
But here's why Gary Patterson is one of the top ten coaches in the country. In the last five years TCU has been in three BCS level bowl games, the most of any Big XII team. They won two of them. One was a RB win, and the other was last year where they destroyed an SEC team. And they finished second. I'd love to see those two meet again this year. Because he is a great coach you have players that believe in you, and trust you 100.
And here's where the Oklahoma game comes in. At the ten minute mark of the forth quarter TCU only had 200 yards of offense. Their defense had given up over 500 years. But they were only behind by 17 but it should have been 117. Then the frogs scored on an 86 yard td pass. On the next possession they intercepted and kicked a fg. Then they forced a point and took the ball and scored a td to pull within one.
Now i admit I didnt understand why they went for two in the third quarter. People don't agree with me on this but I didn't have a dog in the hunt in this game so I enjoyed it as a fb fan. But I loved it when they went for two. Oklahoma was out off to's. They were on their heels. Why not? And GP has a history of doing this late in the game and making it. He did this a few years ago at Boise and WV. They made it, both games were on the road, and in the case of Boise it knocked them out of an at large BCS bowl bid. And after the game he said that he didn't think they would have won in ot. I agree. TCU was hanging on for dear life. And they didn't have nearly as much depth on offense as Oklahoma, and neither did their defense. So with the situation of the game it was a gutsy call. And it was good play the receiver was wide open and waiting for the game winning points. But the sooners Steven Parker leaped high, and I'm talking about basketball player kind of leap, and knocked it down. And that's my dpoy in this year's Big XII. We can now look back and say that it was the play that decided the Big XII title.
Of all the Nov games this ended up as the most exciting. And Baylor/TCU was the best game in Nov. One last thing they were saying that the final scores since TCU and Oklahoma started playing each other have been decide by a total of 15 points.
This could be another real Big XII rivalry in the making.
