Here are a few notes from the portion of Texas football's Tuesday practice that was open to the media:
- Practice was in the stadium for the first time of the spring. It was a misty out and the players were in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets.
- The biggest note of the day was that QB Maalik Murphy was back out at practice and seemed to participate at the same level as all the rest of the QBs. The "rehab" that Steve Sarkisian was hoping Murphy would undertake during spring break apparently worked as planned.
- Murphy was the second QB up in drills, behind Quinn Ewers and ahead of Arch Manning. It was interesting to see that Murphy was immediately (seemingly) placed back into the No.2 role in his first practice back (and, if I'm not mistaken, his first ever spring practice healthy).
- With this said, Murphy has some rust to shake off. He has a firehose of an arm, but he was spraying that thing all around. Some of his balls sailed far out of the grasp of his receivers while others simply missed the mark with their timing and placement. He also showed glimpses of his upside with some really pretty deep dimes from around midfield all the way into the endzone.
- Arch Manning also had a few beautiful deep balls, himself. The two that stuck out to me were both on deeper post routes, one to Jaden Alexis and one to Johntay Cook.
- There was a report that Cam Williams had moved to guard. From all I can tell, that is not the case. While we didn't see much of team-drill activity, we did get to see the OL drills up close (today they were working combo-technique versus two-gapping, head-up defensive linemen over the covered guards) and the pecking order at right tackle was still clearly Christian Jones, then Cam Williams, then No.75 Jaydon Chatman.
- Speaking of Chatmon, Coach Flood really was giving him a lot of praise today. Flood likes/demands his offensive linemen to get the screws of their helmets below the screws of the DL's helmet coming into engagement, and Chatman is really good with this aspect of his pad level.
- We've heard that DB/nickel corner Jaylon Guilbeau is not going to practice this spring with injury, but he's out there moving pretty dang well in warm ups. (The same can be said to some degree for LB/Edge true freshman Derrion Gullette, for that matter.) When Guilbeau comes back, it will be interesting to see if he's set to be the starter at nickel. Jahdae Barron is working a ton at outside corner opposite Ryan Watts, and the staff might think he is their best option there -- he certainly played plenty outside in 2022. For now, although we haven't seen any full "team" drills yet by proper definition, it's pretty clear that Michael Taaffe is working with the starting group of defensive backs (Barron, Watts, S Kitan Crawford and S Jerrin Thompson) as the fifth DB in the nickel.
- Speaking of the defensive depth chart and groupings, we did see some front-seven pursuit type drills on Tuesday which gave a pretty good idea of how things are stacking up right now on the depth chart with the first three units. The inside linebackers appear to be pretty much the same as you'd expect (although one interesting note from today on that end was J'Mond Tapp working with both the edge guys and the inside linebackers as depth). Jaylan Ford and David Gbenda are always the first guys out, while the second group almost always includes Morice Blackwell with a mix of Jett Bush and Anthony Hill.
- Finally, on the defensive line, the units in pursuit drills looked like this - the main takeaways were 1) Aaron Bryant seemingly moving up the depth chart a little bit; 2) Vernon Broughton lining up outside instead of at the defensive tackle; and 3) Colton Vasek (at least in this small set of drills) seeming to still be coming along and not making too big of a dent on the depth chart to start the spring. It probably is to be expected. As Anwar pointed out to me today at practice, Vasek is 230 pounds and still has a little bit of filling out to do physically, much like Ethan Burke coming in last year.
1st group: Buck DE - Justice Finkley, NT - Byron Murphy, DT - T'Vondre Sweat, Jack DE - Barryn Sorrell
2nd group: Buck DE - Ethan Burke, NT - Aaron Bryant, DT - Alfred Collins, Jack DE - Vernon Broughton
3rd group: Buck DE - Jaray Bledsoe, NT - Sydir Mitchell, DT - Zac Swanson, Jack DE - Kristopher Ross
