Mark Helfrich?

Depends entirely on what changes are made. If Helfrich is hired as an OC to replace Beck then I feel it’s a terrific hire. If he is brought on as another assistant that’s below Beck, it’s a waste of coaching talent. Helfrich was the OC at Oregon under chip Kelly I believe. That offense was excellent.

I agree with this assessment. I think Helfrich as OC and Beck as QB coach/top recruiter would make the most sense. Like you say Helfrich as just another guy doesn’t make much sense. I don’t think he’d come in to be just another guy though. Safe to say if this happens there is gonna be a shakeup of some sort.

Imo, the most telling thing about this article is that Oscar Giles, not Tim Beck, is the guy on the hot seat.

Whoever calls plays next year please throw the bubble screen out of the playbook for a bit.

I am not ready to annoint yet another OC that was not the play caller when he was OC somewhere else. Is he the best we can do?

He didn’t call plays for Chip kelly as OC, but I’m pretty sure he called plays for himself when he replaced Chip.

Scott Frost called the plays for Helfrich until he left for UCF. It’s quite possible that Helfrich has never called plays.

Frost was his OC at Oregon... doesn’t mean he called the plays necsssrly. It’s always tough to tell unless the coach announces it...

Either way there Is some value for Herman to having a guy that’s been an HC on staff. I was just looking at Helfrich recored at Oregon. Man he got the shaft

11-2(won the Alamo Bowl
13-2( won the rose, but lost NCG)
9-4(lost the Alamo Bowl)
4-8(fired)

Talk about short leash... I don’t know if he’s actually called plays or not, but either way his resume says he’d be an asset in some way to whatever program he joins.

The day phil knight looked at Oregon and said "Fvck this! I'm out!" was the day the leash at Oregon got really short.

Take a look at those records and tell me if you can determine when Frost stopped calling the plays at Oregon.

Oregon scored 34 points a game last year without Frost(and Mariota) they scored 41 points a game the year Frost was the OC with again a Heisman Trophy winning QB... you can’t just discard that fact.

Overall the offense was still good(top 20 in the country) the year Helfrich got fired. Shit if he somehow got 30 points out of this offense were a playoff contender next year.

With a guy named Matt Lubick calling the plays. That means that Helfrich has never been a full time play caller.

But he has a better resume than a coach that averaged

29
35
32
38

And actually has experience calling plays.

Well obviously Oregon thought enough of him to name him HC and he responded with 33 wins in 3 years and a national title game. I’m willing to bet the guy is a pretty good coach and could handle calling plays.

Seems to me he would want another HC gig. Fastest way to do that is to go be an OC somewhere and kick a$$.
