No one, including Pres. “I won’t negotiate with the Republicans” Biden, thought he could do it, but:

• $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction
• tougher work requirements on certain safety-net programs
• clawing back unspent Covid-relief money
• measures to speed up environmental reviews for major projects
• no tax increases

BOOM! I heard McCarthy speak at a private event a couple of months ago, and came away much more impressed with him than I’d been led to believe by the press clippings. Surprise, surprise.
