Folks-
This one won’t take long. We did what needed to be done to a team like Rice- and we did just that! There once was a time when we struggled against teams like Rice (anyone remember Tulsa last season?). Predictably we went out there and punished Rice as a hungry team with much to prove should have done. On to observations.
1. Sam was Sam. Could be the greatest QB in UT History after it’s all said and done. Ever heard that one before? Next.
2. Welcome back Keaontay Ingram. Buddy, I hate to say It but I will probably for the rest of my life see that dropped pass just like Blake Gideon’s drop against Tech in ‘08. I know NOBODY hurts more about that dropped pass than that guy but still that one is gonna sting for a while.
3. Defense looked good but again, it was against a running team in Rice. We don’t know if there has been any progress in the secondary. I guess we shall find out next Saturday.
4. I remember Aaron Taylor in studio years ago on CBS doing an adequate job but Dear Lord in Heaven above that guy just won’t shut up about random shit! Hearing about how OLinemen Dads may not dress as nice or have as good personal hygiene as other dads but they’re still good dads.. Hey Aaron, “sometimes less is more- quiet is not necessarily a bad thing!”
5. Do you remember a time not that long ago that where we lose a player the caliber of Collin Johnson and being screwed at expecting production not only from that position but perhaps the entire offense? The knock on Johnson is that he simply is not physical enough especially at his size (see LSU pass break-up against much smaller CB for exhibit A) I’m not sure that Malcolm Epps won’t eventually be an upgrade in time. That being said, hope Shackelford is back this week. From listening to Herman last night, it sounds like if he can go he will!
6. I don’t know that there is a better conditioned football team in College Football today. LSU was supposed to have one of the best S&C programs in the Nation and you saw what we did with those guys.
7. Roshon Johnson may be your starting RB by mid-season if he keeps playing like he does. Also, good to see Daniel Young last night running hard- we need his depth and physical running between the tackles to take pressure Sam and our other RB’s.
8. D’Shawn Jamison was a blur- with the recent kickoff return rule, kickoff returns have seemed to have gone the way of the Do Do bird. Was great to see.
9. The great thing about Jake Smith is having a guy like that as a Freshman, like so many of these young guys we have, is knowing they are solid today and will only grow as time goes on. To have a guy back there that can return punts and kickoffs for 3 more seasons after this one is a great luxury to have.
10. Cameron Dicker is a great weapon to have but don’t sleep on Bujcvesvki where he is having a banner year as well. We have seemed to forgotten how unpredictably bad he could be at the most inopportune times. Again, we have these guys for 2 more years after this season- see a trend here?
11. One thing about this staff is they quickly assess weaknesses and address them quickly. We needed explosive plays and we went out and got difference makers at skill positions with speed to burn. We are not where we need to be at the RB position and proceed to target and hopefully land a 5* stud lighting it up in Arizona. That being said, it is obvious that our DLine up front is not at the level necessary to compete at the highest levels and this recruiting cycle we have stud commitments that will soon be on campus.
12. I am not impressed by beating a SEC team like Miss. State that is perhaps above average at best, still K-State looks solid and will be a tough out. They look, well, like K-State again.
13. I was surprised to see Arizona beat Tech last night. Really surprised me but there culture change is going to take time.
14. How would you like to be a FSU fan right now when you know how that is going to finally end? And you KNOW Taggart will get another season after this one- you just know it!
15. Hard to know how good OU is. Oh, they’re good alright, and yes, Jalen Hurts gives them a different dimension at the QB position but i still can’t tell you if they have improved on defense or not.
That’s all I got. We are trending the right way as a program and think the Big 12 is there for the taking. Whatever happens this season, we are loaded for bear going forward for years to come. It’s amazing what good organizational skills and good coaching can do for a program and fan base. Will be hard for any of us to forget how far we have come in just over 2 years.
Beat the Hell outta Okie State!
