I want him.

He takes inferior athletes and runs what is now an out dated offense, but since football is cyclical, it may be the cure we need against the spread, and he wins.

His kids have no where near the talent of most of the team's he plays against and he whips that ass regularly.

I love Niumatalolo . He wins against subpar competition for the most part with marginal players. clob, you already know this - that offense would get stuffed in a P5 conference. Navy does what works for them and they run it to perfection. I say don't mess with a good thing. Paul Johnson left Navy for GT and it didn't exactly go as planned.

Clob, you are better than this. The team on their schedule with the closest thing to a pulse this season, Memphis, kicked their ass.

Can you not realize that Navy beat Notre Dame? Can you not realize that when everyone is doing one thing, you must be out ahead of the new trend?

Football is cyclical-- just like life, business, economic trends, fashion, you name it. We take the old and we make it new.

When the option was popular, you had guys running a 4.5/4.6 running it. And defenses adapted. Now you have guys that have spent their entire lives defending against the spread. You have offensive athletes that run 4.3/4.4 and D-backs that suck at run support because everybody throws the ball.

Explain to me how Navy won 11 games last year, has beaten Notre Dame recently with inferior athletes, and is continuing to have successes.

I'll hang up and listen.

Army vs. OU last year, vs. Michigan this year. I’m with you on this Clob. I don’t know about UT, which has no problem getting top shelf talent, but I’ve always wondered why schools like Kansas, Arkiesaw and the like don’t give it a try - they are beating their heads against the wall trying to do the same thing as other schools that have superior talent. FYI - Paul Johnson won or tied for 4 ACC division titles and won one ACC conference championship at Georgia Tech - not too shabby.

You may need to recheck your stats. Navy did not win 11 games last year. They almost lost 11 though, maybe that’s what you were thinking and got dyslexic? Navy literally lost 10 games last season.

As far as beating Notre Dame, it wasn’t last year when Notre Dame was good. Navy beat Notre Dame in 2016 when ND was 4-8. Notre Dame was so down that year that they lost to a 6-6 Charlie Strong coached Texas team LOL!

The year that Navy did win 11 games? That was actually five seasons ago in 2015. Their best wins that season were against Memphis and an 8-5 Pitt team.

By the way, Navy had two losses during that 11 win season. One to Notre Dame. The other was a 30 point blowout loss to a Tom Herman coached Houston team.

Gimmick offenses are for programs like Navy, not Texas.

I’ll hang up and listen:)

You must have accidentally fallen into your Wurstfest stein and commenced to posting:D

By the way, I like what Herman is building on offense. He wants to build a balanced “power spread” offense that can impose will in the running game and control clock, but also take advantage of elite QBs/WRs in the passing game. Who wouldn’t, right? Tough to do that year in year out unless you’re at a program that can consistently recruit the necessary components. He doesn’t have all that yet but he’s definitely moving in the right direction, and quickly.

Here are the Horns ESPN Offensive Efficiency rankings since Herman arrived:

2017: 97
2018: 24
2019/current: 11

For reference here are the the Charlie years rankings:

2016: 66
2015: 82
2014: 94

@diadevic before and after Beaty's firing, all the way to Miles' hiring, we had this exact discussion about the idea. One poster openly campaigned for us to go all in with hiring Army's Todd Monken.

Without getting too long winded, here are some highlights of our discussion.
  • Georgia Tech is the most recent P5 team to implement this offense, under Paul Johnson. They averaged 7+ wins a season.
  • The schools that implement this offense requires a lot of self discipline and cannot get behind early.
  • You will need a top 20 defense, in yards per play allowed, 3rd Down Conversions, Red Zone defense, and/or turnovers. This helps to keep the game close enough for the offense to do their thing.
  • Recruiting will be very interesting to watch, especially if you begin going after the high 3* and 4* recruits.
Kansas could have gone this route, for we would be okay with being a consistent 7 win team, with an occasional 10+ win season. Texas fans are not going to like this idea.

It may sound offensive, but GT, Navy, and Army usually get the smart students and/or have some self discipline, and they get coached up to not make those errors.

Big 12 offenses are implementing more of a running attack. The 4-2-5 defenses may not be as effective as a 3-4 defense, moving forward. The diversity of a base 3-4 is really nice.

The state of Texas is home to Air Raid/Spread offenses. That dynamic will be very interesting to witness, in reference to recruiting instate players. The higher ranked TBs may be intrigued, but the WRs will need to have a different mentality, willing to sacrifice catches for blocking.

With Monken and Niumatalolo, how open minded are they to diversifying their offense, to incorporate a stronger passing attack, out of their base offense? That will be the key to really get more wins.

How is there offense a “gimmick?” LOL

I worked under a guy in Central Texas that learned the wishbone form Coach Royal. We ran quite a bit of flexbone when I was there. Not too many plays. Inside Veer, Midline, counter option, power, and sweep. It is definitely not a gimmick offense but how are you going to recruit receivers who are going to cut block on 90% of offensive plays.

Exactly. It is what it is, and can be a good option for little programs to have a niche. But there is a reason why no blue bloods are going to voluntarily tie one arm behind their back and limit themselves with an offense like that. You will be limited in the QBs, WRs, and OL you can recruit.

Nailed it. This is exactly why you don't see teams running a run oriented offense like the service academies run.

The day we refer to the spread as a traditional offense and the option as a gimmick has finally arrived. Hell freezing over will commence shortly
