There have been very few college football coaches who had a massive overhaul on their staff that eventually led to success.
However, Texas football coach Tom Herman is about to pick to the brain of a successful coach on Thursday.
Herman is flying to South Bend, Indiana, to spend the day learning from Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, according to my sources. Notre Dame finished 4-8 in 2016, and Kelly completely overhauled his staff. Kelly hired a new offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special team coordinator, and strength coach. According to SI.com, Kelly hired 17 new football staff members after that season.
Since the end of the 2019 regular season, Herman has hired seven new football coaches. The carryovers from that season are running backs coach Stan Drayton, offensive line coach Herb Hand, and defensive line coach Oscar Giles.
After that 4-8 season, Notre Dame finished 10-3 in 2017, 12-1 in 2018, and 11-2 in 2019.
It appears Herman is ready to learn how to obtain similar results with his new staff on this trip.
