Saturday will be my Dad's 68TH STRAIGHT TEXAS/OU GAME AT THE STATE FAIR!!!
This is the greatest event our State has to offer. The Burnt Orange and Crimson. The fight songs. The hatred. The crowd split at the 50 yard line. Fletcher's. The rivalry. Bevo and the Sooner Schooner. The State Fair backdrop. I didn't go to either school, and I still get goose bumps.
I'm not gonna lie. Last year sucked. 25% capacity. No state fair. It looked like a scene from Escape from New York --- a glimpse of what the world used to look like, but was now very depressing because it had all been taken away.
Now its back. Both teams are ranked. OU is treading water, and UT is trending up - its a great event when there is nothing on the line - but this year should be tremendous.
My view on Covid - if you're not in the danger zone (obesity, pre existing condition, AGE), then there's little reason to worry. In this case, my old man is in great shape but is in his mid-80's. There was never a doubt that he was going. If he doesn't go, the second the opening kickoff occurs will be the beginning of the end. If you are the praying type, go ahead and lift up my old man.
He's already got his sign for Game Day (does not include FJB - he was born in the '30s and they don't talk that way). And his T-Shirt is ready. So if you see an old man in a shirt that says "68 straight Texas/OU games later, and OU STILL SUCKS" and the middle aged guy wearing "I'm with Mr. 68" next to him - say hello. It's going to be a great day - for the 68th year in a row. HOOK'EM HORNS!!!
