Official Orange and White pancake social Spring Game

When did we get horse teeth cheerleaders?

Show the freaking POM SQUAD.

Sam throws two outs. One flutters and is dropped and one sails over the WR. Little rusty.

Our backup center can't get the snap back. He's shorted two and rolled one.

I see the tight end will be a non-factor. Some things never change. I thought Beck did a good job his last year.

I went to the scrimmage and I can’t sit here and tell you how the season will go next year but I can tell you that the athlete upgrade over the past 2 years is very evident!!!!

Limited on what we can take away from both sides of the ball given the weather conditions severely limiting the ability to throw the ball down the field.

My thoughts:
QB: Sam didn't look great, but between weather, dropped passes, and QBs being down with contact I'm not worried. He had a few bad throws and completely missed McCulloch on the int. He's a competitor and this was very evident in how he chased down McCulloch and made the tackle.

Casey Thompson made more sharp throws than Sam. He's got the running ability to operate in the offense. I feel more confident today that he could step in if Sam goes down with injury and make enough passes and be very effective in the QB run game.

RB: Whittington looked really good running the ball. Showed good patience and seemed to maximize runs even without a lot of space. Showed his speed and acceleration on a few runs late. Kirk Johnson had some good burst too, hopeful his wrist injury isn't too bad.

WR: Lots of drops throughout and not a lot of great deep balls to go after. Epps wasn't perfect today but flashed what he is capable of. Even with tight coverage, he is hard to keep from catching the ball. Bru didn't get too many opportunities but you can see how dangerous he is after the catch.

OL: First team O-line seemed to do quite well. Things get shaky with the second team. Parker Braun will be a nice addition and I think we can have 7-8 guys ready to go.

DL: The replacements for last years starters held up nicely. I think we will have a pretty solid 2-deep there, just need some experience.

LB: Shark had a great game. The coverage in space was impressive. Tackling seemed good across the board.

DBs: These guys lay the wood. A little less pressure given the lack of the deep ball today though the offense did test them with it. Coverage seemed good overall. Jalen Green looked really solid. Overshown and Foster continue to be beasts.

What did you think of Roschon at the end? He had a very confident “it” about him.

Didn't get to see much Roschon so hard to say. I would think he'll be QB3 this year and take a RS.

Assuming Sam doesn't leave early (pretty safe I think) I think the big moment for Roschon and Casey will be when the 2020 back-up is decided. It wouldn't shock me to see whoever is QB3 at that point transfer. With Hudson Card coming in 2020 and hopefully Preston Stone in 2021, you do not want to fall behind on the depth chart.

I do believe he has the it factor! Time will tell. In the quarterback and receiver category I do worry about keeping them all happy.

Roschon didn’t look like anything special to me. He has a long way to go and the little playing time he got shows that the coaches agree. Thompson is clearly QB2.

I don't think we will keep everyone happy, which is both a blessing and a curse.

We have so much young WR talent (and more on the way) that I think a few guys will find themselves passed over on the depth chart and potentially look to transfer.

As I said above, I wouldn't be shocked to see either Johnson or Thompson transfer before next season - whoever ends up stuck in the QB3 role. The 2021 QB battle to replace Sam will be very interesting - Johnson, Thompson, Card and hopefully Preston Stone duking it out.

My two clear observations after watching the full scrimmage.
1) Nothing innovative in our offensive scheme
2) Todd Orlando beat the hell out of Tim Beck. Todd O. is supposed to be limping with our lack of defensive leadership and talent. It was very windy and it could have affected our play calling, but, we shouldn't look so impotent.

Disagree. After watching many many spring games I know this is exactly what is to be expected. And the second thing to always expect is people trying to draw conclusions from spring games when they shouldn’t.

I am not exactly sure what you disagree with. But, it looks obvious that the offense looks slo-mo and running game was not impressive. Fall camp will be where the final evaluations are done, but, nothing wrong with observing and drawing a conclusion of where things stand as of now.

Herman said the offense was very vanilla, because they didn't want to put anything on film. Said there was a lot of RPO they didn't use. That, combined with the wind limiting the passing game explains a lot. No need to panic.

Outside of scholarship athletes you've got to be top 6% academically to get into UT Austin. The 'talent' of yore is in San Marcos.
True that. God I used to miss they days when parents produced hot daughters that were also smart.

The strong winds took any kind of passing game out of play. Sure they could have got a deep pass or two, but they all sailed too far for the receiver to get to it. Tough conditions. Orlando knew that and did what he does best which is stop the run. If Orlando knows the primary threat is the run game he shuts you down, period. With that said too many drops by the receivers but I’m not sure it would have made a difference anyway, because the defense had their number that day. I’m pleasantly pleased with how the defense played. Especially Jalen Green.

I agree on the winds. The OL didn't do very well for one. Beck could have had Sam drill a couple of tight end slants. I didn't think the RBs looked very good. The offenses just struggled too much, in my opinion. But, as Metcalf said, it is nothing to panic over.

Seemed like the defense was loading up against the run given the conditions. Some have suggested Herman had Orlando play more straight up in the second half to get a more fair look.

Whittington looked great I thought. Seems to have taken to RB very well. Kirk looked like he had some good burst though opportunities were limited for him and Ingram.
