These threads about who is going to be the next fb coach are silly and I'll prove it someone like me always takes part in it :)

First of all if we win out the rest of the way there will be no coaching changes at Texas period.
At least not this year. I really like coach Strong and what he stands for but the man can not seem to hire a good coaching staff. Just when we finally have a qb and a promising oc, our defensive coaches are lousy. If coach Strong comes back it will only be his fourth year and he will have no members of his original coaching staff.

That being said my case for Brent Venables.

I'm going to use a little bit of RRR history here. The two men who made the TX/OK game the rivalry it is today were Bud Wilkinson and Darrell Royal. BW came in and beat TX 9 out of 10 and none of the games were even close. Well if you can't beat him, hire one of his players. Darrell Royal was an AA qb and safety for OK and played for Wilkinson. As a matter of fact Darrell Royal still holds the school record for most interceptions and it's been almost 70 years since his last game. So TX hires him and it was a case where the teacher taught the student to well. DKR comes in and beats OK 12 out of 13 times. What a kick in the teeth it must have been for those sooners for one of their own to come in a whip their beloved sooners like that.

Bob Stoops is now 11/7 against our Longhorns. That's a definite edge no denying that. What hurts me is the edge in conference titles but mostly the blowout losses 4 of them to be exact. Now we would not be taking about Baylor and Art Briles today if it wasn't for what happened on 11/19/11. On that night OK seemed to be in control of the Big XII race and looked like it had a great chance to be in the title game but a funny thing happened to the Stoopster that night. They were playing Baylor a team that had never beaten OK not even once the games were never even close. RG III had a game for the ages that night. He threw for almost 500 yards, 4 td passes and ran for another 70 yards. It was comparable to Vince's game against SC. The last td pass came with just a few seconds left and Baylor finally beat OK. I say this because the dc for OK that night was a guy named Brent Venables. That game saved not just Baylor fb but their entire athletic program. It's the reason that people actually talk about Baylor fb now. Well Bob Stoops was obviously furious. So mad he fired the cb coach and BV. Little brother Mike had just been fired as hc at AZ and big brother brought him back to OK.

Poor old BV. All he did was get hired by a guy named Dabo Swinney who is probably the best coach in the country. He's been there 5 years and Clemson led the country in defense two years ago and has been in the top ten the last few years. OK has done nowhere near that good. I went on a Clemson site and rivals has BV listed as one of the top 6 recruiters in the ACC and in the top 25 overall. Damn you think Stoops overreacted a little bit? He gets into it on the sidelines they have an grad asst on him the whole game just to keep him from going to far out on the field and getting a penalty on him.

Look BV is a h*** of an asst coach and I can't for the life of me don't understand why he is not a hc somewhere. They say he is waiting for the right job. But hey if not TX than why not Baylor, if TT doesn't turn it around they might want to take a look at him. He also played at KSU under Snyder but word around the campfire in Manhattan says that Snyder wants his son to succeed him. If that's the case than TT, Baylor, or TX might want to take a look at this man. He recruited and coached some great players when he was at OK and now at Clemson. He coached in the Big XII for 13 years and coaches at a school that plays a spread offense has one of the best qb's in the country. And lets face it the past three seasons Big XII defense has been horrible. We need to go in a whole different direction when it comes to coaches or we will continue to be a joke ot the rest of the country. Why not try a top notch dc like BV?

And in the last two years Clemson has beaten the stone cold h*** out of OK in the last two bowl games. You think Venables hasn't enjoyed sticking it to the man who fired him? You think he wouldn't enjoy doing it on a yearly basis if given the opportunity? It would be Royal vs Wilkinson all over again :)

And lets be honest about Tom Herman. Just two weeks ago his Houston team got thumped by SMU. SMU!!!! My family is opposed to TH because they are all convinced he is a cheater and will get us on probation if he is the hc.

Just my .02 worth

sorry for being long winded

I don't think Texas will hire an asst to be a head coach. Although I've argued that other programs have done it and it's worked out very well. Suprised venables hasn't gotten a head job yet though. He's been good for a long time.

Dabo has a 17 million buyout this year and it drops to 10 million next year.

We ain't hiring Dabo

Saban is the best coach in the nation but dabo is definitely a hot commodity right now. What about Petersen at Washington? Would Texas have interest in him?

Why would

Why would Dabo leave for a place where he will be loved for the rest of his born days. Heck if he wins a nc, parents in SC will name their sons Dabo for time and eternity :)

Little hyperbole there

Last time.....Peterson has a sick child and the child will need care for the rest of his life. They have a doctor that the family loves. Peterson WILL NOT LEAVE.

Chad Morris saved Dabo Sweeney from being fired. His job was saved by the spread offense. Hiring DV was a good move, since they are playing better defense also, but he's not the best HC in the nation.

Where is the love for Chad Morris? Has proven that he can be an above average, if not great, OC. Helped saved Clemson and has taken SMU from being the doormat, to being a very competitive team and in a year or two could see them being in the group of 5 conversation in a two or three years (assuming he stays). He obviously has the high school coaches connection as every player he has signed while at SMU has been from the state of Texas. He would absolutely have the Cen-Tex market locked down being from LT. Could do a lot worse.

Nice post Tree hugger in Cali but you will be hard pressed to find any OU fans regretting getting rid of Vulnerable Venables. He has done well where he's at but you can never unsee the USC, WVU,BOISE State beat downs. Yes, Please hire Brent Venables. Dabo the best coach in CFB? Have you been smoking pot again? You claimed you gave that up?

you just proved the point I was making that you jumped all over me about. It's not that Texas can't, but it's not a good financial decision.

I imagine Dabo has his eye on Bama when Saban retires. I hear what everyone is saying on Peterson having a sick kid and not leaving and stuff. Still think Horns have a responsablity to the program to put an offer on the table. I will point out that having a child with can put a financial burden on a family. The Horns do have the ability to pay him like Saban, Meyer.

He likely has the pre season #1 team next year at UW though.

They think that a guy that has lost 3 games in his 1st 2 season and has dominating wins over OU and FSU is a shitty coach. How could you ever concieve that they would consider a guy that is 6-14 over the same period? He should have turned over his entire roster with 4 and 5 star recruits this off-season.

I know this is like feeding the troll, but I can't tell if you are serious or this was supposed to be a joke. Herman came from much better "roots" than Morris and still only has 1 5 star on his roster in his second year, and Morris beat Herman head up. Morris is building from the bottom up, he is not taking the win today mode without paying any attention to the future. Give him 3-5 years and I would put money on it that Morris has SMU being the talk of the Group of 5

You mean Herman has only convince 1 5 Star to come to Houston since he's been the coach? Ed Oliver, the highest rated recruit to ever sign with a Group of 5 program.

So Morris is better than Herman because he's 1-1 against him? I guess that makes Herman better than Stoops and Jimbo Fisher.

Best coach of the year is a lot like being the MVP. Take the NBA for example. As far as I'm concerned Lebron is still the man but he's not going to be the MVP every year. Needless to say no current coach can match what Nick Saban has accomplished everybody knows that. But even with a head to head win last year I still thought Dabo Swinney was #1. It took the greatest onside kick in the history of fb for Bama to win. So now we come to 2016 and there is no reason to think there won't be another Tide/Tiger matchup in the playoffs. Not right now at least.

Well I know one thing. Brent Venables is a better, much better, dc than Mike Stoops. Compare their stats from the last five seasons, since Bob Stoops fired him. And BV has probably faced better competition than MS.

You seem to a sooner with some good observations. As far as hiring a coordinator and not an experienced hc. Look at your school the two best coaches OK has had in my lifetime were a couple of coordinators, Switzer, and Stoops. And I'm well aware that the next hc at TX be it soon or ten years from now will be another hc.

BV is facing different offenses but has done well overall. Certainly not arguing Mike Stoops is doing well but you know what? Charlie Strong was considered a good DC BEFORE coming to the Big 12. He doesn't look worth a crap either does he?
