But 80 years ago today, thousands of Allied soldiers including an estimated 2500-3000 Americans died in the fight to secure the beachhead.
One can still see remnants of the Belgian gates and hedgehogs that soldiers had to navigate to reach shore.
What still remains intact are the graves of many who gave their lives there.
One can almost hear their spirits pleading generations to never forget what they did in Normandy.
