I am a Simms fan. He made a huge impact on Texas’s recrutimg surge that led to 2005
Applewhite was the better qb my man.
I was all team Applewhite because he was the Rocky of QBs. Little dude with a bobblehead helmet but had the heart of a damn lion, the kid was scrappy.
In reality, Simms was a better QB though. His fallacy was underperforming when the stage got big. Too many interceptions.
Arch reportedly wants to redshirt his first year. This is a BIG deal for us if Ewers starts THIS year. No chance Card & Murphy both stay if Ewers gets the job. As long as he quits staring down his intended target, I think we'll be good to go in the QB dept for the next 4-6yrs.
Give Arch another year or 2 to develope.....watch out!

No. Mack just pulled the trigger too soon. Applewhite should have started that year and maybe the next. Applewhite would have peaked in a very obvious way. Simms had more potential. I mean, one played in the NFL for many seasons and the other didn’t. NFL saw something you didn’t, I guess.
In the Cotton Bowl his sophomore season he suffered an ACL. The following season at TT he suffered an ACL on the other knee. By his fifth season he just couldn't go. When he came off the bench against CO was the first time he saw real playing time. But that HB win over WA was Major's finest hour. That game will have a special place in my burnt orange heart.
I don't know if we'd have been a better team had Major started that season. You know word around the campfire was that Mack promised Papa Phil that Cris would start his freshman season.
Do you think Redding and other big time recruits would have gone to Texas because of Major?

Sometimes it's not what you bring to the table but, who else do you bring to the table. Wasn't necessarily the case with Simms because he was the prize at that time.
We've offered quite a few close friends and relatives of highly regarded targets. Hell, we've even given scholarships to girlfriends in different sports at least twice that I can remember. Lol
I like the fact that Arch on his commitment, didn't call a press conference or do the hat thing drama.
Possibly. I think Strong is a good guy & great mentor to kids, I just don't believe he has the demeanor of a top HC. The jury is still out on Sark and time will tell. I really like the direction he has laid out as far as the type of team he wants to build and seems to have the foundation coming together. Let's see if he can put it all together.
Agreed. Pretty sure he knew the earlier he committed the better chance of other top talents to join the ride. Smart decision.
Agree. Also, Sark has GOT to bust this woke, entitled attitude that permeates within the team. They need to have a humble, hard-working, blue-collar mentality. Then on the field, own it! Take no prisoners, be physical, dominate and NEVER take their foot off of the gas!
These kids want to win desperately. 2 years ago after beating KSU the players sang Texas fight with years in their eyes. The talent is here the coaches, Strong and Herman, falled them. Look this guy Sarkisian set a school record 6 game losing streak his first year. I just don't know about this guy.

Not much of a promise considering simms started 2 games, one due to injury. . . .BRILLIANT. Papa Phil wanted son to shirt.
Major would have lead us to a 3rd place in the South finish, outside of the OU game and 2nd Colo game, Simms was amazing that year

Simms definitely brought the WRs and was the bell cow of the recruiting classes, they damn sure didn't come to play with your boy.

He was stuck with Herman’s leftovers. He had a couple bad apples in the bunch last year that spoiled the whole team. They lost a ton of close games and it’s not like they were getting blown out (minus the Arkansas game). You have to give a coach at least 3 years to build his foundation and instill his culture. Not saying he’s Saban but even Saban went 7-6 his first year.

You say you're a longhorn fan? Look at TX especially if you're a 5* qb in hs you are judged by what you did against OK. Simms failed all 3 times. You think that CO game wasn't a big deal? We would have played Miami for the national title if we won that game. Knowledgeable longhorn fans, which you are not, know this. You're a tshirt fan nothing more.
And since you brought it up let's talk about the receivers from the 2000 class. BJ Johnson was opinionated about Simms vs Applewhite.
In the be 2000 Holiday bowl we played OR. Cris was the QB in that game. Late in the game we were behind by 7 but we had a first and goal. BJ Johnson dropped not one but three passes in the end zone. Roy Williams dropped the other one.
Fast forward to the 2001 Holiday bowl we played WA in that one. In that game Major was the qb. It was a back and forth game late in the game we were behind by 3. This time Major hit BJ on a perfectly thrown long ball and this time BJ didn't drop it. We scored 2 plays later the defense got the ball back and Major took the last snap. At the time it was the greatest comeback in school history. And Roy Williams didn't drop the ball in this Holiday bowl caught a couple TD passes.
Was Major a better talent than Cris? No. But in the OR hb, the CO and OK games Cris did not get it done. Major also had a couple of big wins against NB, and a Cotton Bowl win against MSS.
Major had the competitive savvy, the burning desire to win that Cris didn't have.
One last thing those 4 receivers were overrated. I don't care if they were 5* players they didn't get it done. As a group they scored 0 tds against OK and I'm taking about 4 years. But I'm sympathetic towards them. That a**hole Bill Little came in and hyped them to unrealistic greatness before they even played a game especially Roy Williams. I couldn't stand Bill Little.

Sorry, people who follow the Horns not an individual player (we call them fan boys) realize that Major was largely over hyped and had his share of stinkers. I'd call the BigXII title game a big stage, both stunk up the joint when they had a chance.
I don’t buy this argument. Texas still had tons of talent last year. There’s zero excuse to lose 6 games in a row and lose to Kansas. How can Texas go toe to toe against OU but then lose to Kansas?? The season spiraled out of control and that’s on Sark.
Im willing to give Sark more time but if something similar happens this year then I think some serious questions need to be addressed. It was pretty obvious from the first season that Charlie Strong wasn’t the guy. I think Sark is doing all the right things so hopefully he can turn things around.
Anything less than 8 wins this year is fair to criticize. Until then last year is nothing more than a distant memory. Charlie Strong never recruited in 2 no. 1 overall QBs in the nation in back to back years. The last time we recruited in 2 QBs of Arch and Ewers talent level we went on a nice 10 year run (Simms and VY). That’s enough reason right there to be hopeful.
There were a few knuckleheads on the team last year that are gone now. It sounds like the kids that are here now are bought in.

His recruiting is buying him years on his contract but to me the floor is 8 in 2022 (regular season)
Roy Williams was an under achiever. He played in the NFL 8 years and was a decent player at best. Those other guys didn't even play in the NFL. Those receivers and Simms were a disappointment. We lost 5 straight games to OK by double digit margins.
We did have some elite recruits back then who may not have beaten OK but played great in the RRR. D Johnson, Babers, Scaife, and others. They played their hearts out in those games.
3 interceptions against WA you say? A lot of great qbs started out games playing bad but righted themselves and came back to win.
Those were some good players but the skill players from those classes did not get it done. And as for this ignorant claims about cultists over the last 30 years Major was at best the 5th best qb. Vince, Colt, Sam, and James Brown were all better. Maybe if Cris had a better oc than Greg Davis the whole offense could have better.

Simms started the 2 most evenly matched games.
Vince did not start game 4 but played most of the game save 2 early series and then played his worst game of his career the next year.
So of the 5 games you are triggered about, Simms played the 2 most competitive.
It's almost as if you don't really watch TEXAS football.
PS, 8 years is a pretty nice NFL career.

These days, I believe busting the wokeness at any college is a tall order. Progressives have the education systems locked down everywhere except for Hillsdale type institutions.
Everything else you mentioned is definitely still on the table.
