So I’m a little surprised that this topic hasn’t hit the board yet, maybe some just hoping it isn’t true. It’s getting headlines across the country and now involving other teams.
Obviously I am a biased fan for the Astros and have been torn about the accusations. The Stros have been in the spotlight a lot lately for both good (the World Series), and bad (assistant GM yelling at female reporters).
With the accusations of sign stealing I’m not on the fence. If it’s done without using any form of technology, gained by players on the field, maybe a runner on 2nd sending a signal to the batter, picking up “tells”, and sharing it with teammates, I’m good with that. It’s gamenship(sp). If we are better at it then you are, that’s your deficiency.
What I do have a problem with is using technology (cameras), or other forms of technology. Be it hidden out in center field, in dugouts, anywhere. It’s cheating. Not just an advantage, but cheating.
As a lifelong Astros fan, it pains me to hear these accusations. I am a believer of the path they took to get the talent we have, the people in the organization and the management team on the field. First class. Above the behavior of some good teams (Patriots). Is everyone perfect in the organization, no. The trade for Osuna comes to mind.
I’m still feeling the joy of winning in 2017, and also the pain of just losing it. I have yet to take down my flag on my house because I don’t want the season to end yet.
With this said, if these accusations come to be true, shame on them. There are consequences and punishments that need to be accepted. Good people (maybe they aren’t good people), will need to lose their jobs. And there are some big names out there now-Cora, who is now the Red Sox manager, Beltran, who is now the Mets manager, and of course, Hinch.
This all started to come to a head this week with Mike Fiers making the claims. He pitched for the 2017 team, but was not on the World Series roster. He was not signed for the following year. He has some bitterness towards the team, and has admitted so. He is using the platform of “its costing others jobs”. He could be right.
Whatever ends up being the true result, I’m a fan of the team and will still root for the team and hang my flag. If there are cheaters on the team, it will sadden me, but they should be done.
Whew, I’m thirsty and thinking I need to pop open a recently acquired KBS stout from Founders.
