I know this might seem like an odd request but I was asked to help a friend. I don't know where to go so I'm here. Please help me assist my friend. His daughter "Megan" was hitching a ride with her friend "Katy" from Colorado and they got picked up for speeding outside Childress, TX. Long story short, the Katy had pot in the vehicle and now Megan is in need of legal counsel.

I have a list of over 150 attorneys but I need a winner. Megan is a great kid so this is breaking my heart. Who would you hire? Thanks.

I know the federal judge there. His nickname is Corky. (No BS) Not going to post his name on here but a quick Google search will tell you all you need to know. They will make recommendations.

I can't say thank you enough. Thank you so much.

Best of luck. The DPS in that area are some of the most highly trained narcotics police in the country. as that area is one of the countrys epicenters for drug movements in the country. They dont generally make arrests unless they have lock down cases. The one thing they have going for them is that hopefully they werent trafficing, only individuals having a good time. Too bad for your friend.

It is beyond my understanding and belief how this still happens.

It does seem like a national insanity. More people die from prescription drugs ( those pain prescriptions the govt mandated) than illegal drugs. No one dies from pot. According to George Will, the government seized more property than criminals did last year. If we legalized drugs and Mexico legalized guns, the cartels would disappear

The debate on whether pot should be legal will not help those girls one bit and therefore it isnt useful in this conversation. What has been over looked is that one or both in that car were smoking the stuff or they would not be arrested. One does not get searched for speeding. When the officer spoke to the driver it must have been apparent that drugs were in the vehicle....i.e.smell. If that was the case then very likely the driver was impaired and will face DUI charges as well as possession.. The police could be applauded for taking an impaired driver off the road.

People who have smoked weed generally don't drive dangerously. My dad was Dallas assistant county health officer when I was ateen. He pulled me aside one day to tell me about drugs. Alcohol was the worst. You could dry out a drunk, but his brain damage crippled his ability. They required seizure prophylaxis. Heroin addicts complained about withdrawal, but once straight could return to their old vocations.

among the things I have issue with is that the idea of being in control is mostly self assessed, which is biased opinion at its worst. As I said, I did not want to debate the idea of whether or not pot should be legal that is completely beside the point in this topic If they had a vote tomorrow, I would vote to legalize it. However...those girls got into trouble when it was not legal. I wish the OP good luck in his quest to help his friends daughter. If everything he said is true, then getting the other girl to own up to owning the stuff would go a long way in clearing his friend. If she doesnt.....well....good luck again.

Gotta disagree.... police will search anyone for any reason if they think it may get them a bust... high narcotics trafficking routes will ALWAYS have overzealous police looking for any reason to search the vehicle. Hell I got searched by the police with NO smell of drugs, and no real probable cause - ( i got pulled over for "failing to signal a turn" after my blinker kicked off DURING the turn..... ) and i wasnt even in a narcotics trafficking area...

and fwiw - several State level Supreme Courts have ruled that the smell of mariuana is NOT basis for probable cause when it comes to the law, and the USSC have even debated the use of K-9 units due to the handlers being able to manipulate the animals in order to get a positive hit on the vehicle.... so lets punp the brakes on some of those misconceptions about police only doing things bc of certain criteria being met....

also it is worth noting that in high traffic areas like this, some of these officers may do anything they can think of in order to get a chance for a search on the hopes they find it.

Yea, in 78 I went to Colorado for a week after HS graduation with some buddies. Coming back through west Texas, cops pull us over for speeding, and one of them says "I smell it back here Joe" or whatever his name was. They then proceed to pull all our dirty clothes out of our back backs, spread it all over the highway, and then after they are done just leave us to pick it all up. Back then if you had long hair you were a target. That's all it took.

Ironic thing was we all met at NA/AA meetings and had all been straight for over a year. For me it had been over 2. I still have trust issues with cops cause I got pulled over all the time just because of my hair. Also most 18 year olds don't know their rights and when they can just say no, get a warrant.

I got pulled over at the checkpoint South of Alpine 4 years ago. We were living in an RV with 3 dogs. The drug dog "indicated" the r front bin. The Barney wanted to look. So I said sure, that's where we keep the dog food. Showed it to them, asked if their dog was hungry. Young folks would have been searched, but they know not to disturb mature adults.

I stand by what I said. They don't do a search for speeding without a reason.

Here's the real truth. Not all cops are bad. In fact many of them are there to do their job and pretty much follow the rules. AND on the flip side, you also have cops that abuse their power.

What happened here, we don't know. Its not fair to go from, "not only did the cops clearly have reason to search, but the driver was probably impaired so we should thank this cop". Nor should one just sit here and say that clearly no one in the car knew there were drugs.

It is very plausible that the passenger had no idea that her friend had stuff in the car. Just as all sorts of other scenarios are plausible. I'm glad with the limited knowledge I have seen posted here, that I am not the judge in this case.

Dude was just asking for a lawyers name, not a jury of his messageboard peers to judge either girl.
