Ketch and Chad discussed this on House Divided yesterday, but the situation we’re in right now is less than ideal for the conference. If you think about the possible paths for us to the CFP, the least cumbersome one is actually to miss the conference championship game and instead have our extra game be a home game in the first round of the playoff. There is virtually no incentive to play in the CCG as the loser and even if you win and get the bye, you had to play an extra game to get that bye, so what did you really gain? You have the glory of winning the conference championship, but I think that will lose more and more luster in the current format.

There are a number of reasons this sport needs a governing body, not the least of which is to establish standards for officiating, but the championship system is another big one. The next iteration of the CFP should have the conference championship games a part of it like the NFL.

Josh Pate has talked about it for a while, but I think he’s spot on with the idea that we need to have a championship for the G5 level separate from the P4 national championship. The only reason we’re in this situation is because they feel the need to give everyone a path to the same championship even though it’s clearly skewed towards the P4. Why not just acknowledge there’s really two levels to the sport of college football, put the top 64 programs in 4 conferences and build the playoff around those 4 conferences.
