Well folks, the disease has reared its ugly head with my best friend.
He's drinking over a case(24) of beer a day starting at 6am up to 40 on some days. Was recently in the hospital and labs show liver failure and CT shows cirrhosis.
He stopped coming to games months ago, he's been driving his kids around drunk, and being a general asshole to his family. He's alienated his parents and siblings, his older kids from his ex wife won't talk to him and refuse to visit, and his current wife just left town with their young kids.
We(his friends) don't know what to do. There are 6 of us including him who have been playing sports together on the same team for 20+ years and are very close. We've known he's had a problem for a while but but did not know the extent until his wife reached out. The 5 of us had an intervention Saturday morning with him(with his wife and kids already gone out of state) and he agreed to go to detox. Made it two days and checked himself out against medical advice saying it was a breeze and that he didn't need any meds which was a complete lie because he signed a release and his wife kept us informed on his progress.
He's back home(alone now) and doing the typical addict things blaming his wife for leaving and not supporting him and now using us(his friends) as an excuse because we checked on him to make sure he wasn't dead after leaving detox. He basically told her she was ruining the family and that she should've been there to support him when he got out like we were. Totally a gut punch.
He said he's signed up for an 8 week online outpatient(feels like just lip service) thing because he has to work even though his wife had already contacted them about FMLA and that was an option. His wife is going to some AlAnon classes as are myself and his closest friends on the team to try to understand the disease better but it's not pretty right now.
If y'all could send some good mojo toward him and his family whether that's through prayer, voodoo, or quantum entanglement that would be nice. I'm sad, angry, annoyed, scared, confused, and feeling guilty like we should've known and should be doing more to help.
This sucks.
Anyway, sorry for the dear diary but it helps me feel a bit better just to put out stream of consciousness to total strangers.
