This morning, I read Michael Hall's article "The City of Eternal Boom", in this month's Texas Monthly, about the "New Austin". And a few moments ago, Cody Johnson's "What's Left Of Texas?" shuffled on my iPod, while out working in the yard. So I'm feeling a bit nostalgic, and/or God is sending me some sort of message.
I realize that more and more these days, especially if I'm in that part of town, I tend to gravitate towards visiting and patronizing some of Austin's older venues and places to go. Even sometimes, if there is a "better" or "newer" place right next door.
Do you find yourself doing this too? If so, where?
These are some of my "old school" favorites. What others deserve to be kept around, with some more patronage?

Why do I ask, and why do I think it matters? Read on for the back story.....
I think I've been subconsciously trying to do my share, to make sure the older places stick around. I think I'm doing this, just to make sure at least a few are still there, when my kids are old enough to venture into Austin. And because there's been too many iconic places shut their doors in the last 10 years, run out of the market and forced to make way for the newer, and "hipper" types of places and venues. I wouldn't even be surprised to learn in this thread that some of these have closed very recently.
As my kids are reaching their teens, they are starting to have their own opinions on where we should go when we go into Austin on the weekends. And it ain't EVER to any of the older places, but the newer ones.
Before you get started, yeah, I know I'm basically tilting at windmills in my efforts.
And please understand, that I'm not really knocking ALL of the new places. Just some. Maybe I'll list those out as well someday And a few of the old places that went, some of them sort of needed to go. Many of these newer, "hipster" places are really great, and a few have even become some of my new favorites. I'm not some sort of 0% growth sort of Hippy who never wants to see any change. I like and enjoy capitalism very much. I just don't want to see all the recent change completely erase the old scenes.
Also, having moved here in 1987, I realize I'm not exactly as "old school" as some of you out there, who grew up here, or arrived in the 60's or 70's. But certainly am feeling close enough these days
