The Electoral College was not an accident. It was put there by the founders after a great deal of discussion, argument and compromise as a way to assure that the very thing that gave rise to their own revolution would not infect their new country. Hence the concept of the representative republic, not a pure democracy. It was to assure a proper representation of all areas and populations of the country owing to existing and surely to grow differences in culture, economies and contributions. It was to avoid the tyranny of the majority. It was to prevent the future highly populated urban areas without an acre of crop land from voting a tax on crop acreage in less populated rural areas to pay for paving their carriage trails. Do you seriously want the population of New York or San Francisco dictating the use of natural resources in Texas? Do you want your social customs and behavior dictated by people with whom you share very few social and cultural norms? Do you get the idea?
