Like you, I was so glad the game went into double overtime as I had a chance to see if my new home defibrillator really worked.

What a great crowd and awesome atmosphere! Baby Bevo helped make it a special night. He's already beautiful – can't wait until he gets fully growed.

Quarterbacks
  • Boo. True frosh. First game. At night. National television. Biggest crowd evah. Big time opponent.... The 'it' factor on display (again).
  • Swoopes. You, sir, will be fondly remembered by 'Horns fans for years to come. And for more than just your football skills. Great job.
Running Backs
  • D-Fore: "I WILL kill you before this game's over." .... "See? Told ya so."
  • Seems like Warren is still running too high going into the line. He needs to stay lower until the second level then he can be the bumper that the pinball DBs bounce off of.
Receivers
  • I did not know Jake Oliver was the all-time leading receiver in Texas coming outta high school. He showed some strength in those two clutch first downs he made.
  • How great was it to see Juice blow by the DB and make that catch? Sucks he couldn't get it into the EZ. Did you notice how much he was on the field? The coaches really like what he brings to the field.
  • A-Fore with the highlight catch of the game! Just like in the Spring Game. I think we'll be seeing a dozen more of the same from him this season.
  • Burt: WOO-H-- Oh, crap – how did you drop that? .... Burt, what are doing – it's in your hands! Catch it!! .... YES! Touchdown! Atta baby, Burt!
Offensive Line
  • Without further review, it appeared that Shack did a pretty decent job overall considering his situation.
  • Perk needs to heal. Let him sit out this week and for the UTEP game – we need him fully healthy going into "the big stretch."
  • Again, not having re-watched the game, Connor Williams won't just be All-Big 12 this year if he keeps it up.
Defensive Line
  • They did enough, but just barely, to help secure the win.
  • After being owned by the Irish, Naashon Hughes finally escaped just in time for the 4th quarter.
Linebackers
  • You could really see the maturation of Wheeler, not just in his run play, but in his drops. Sure, he gave up that TD catch; but last year he would have been 30 yards away on the wrong side of the field.
  • Malik played a pretty solid game with 6 solos and a sack.
Defensive Backs
  • Davante Davis is allowed one baaad game this year, isn't he?
  • Hill looked pretty good, while Haines.... Hope Dylan is okay, though – Charlie indicated a head injury but didn't elaborate.
  • Can we nickname DeShon "DaShock?"
In the post-game, Charlie said the sideline interference call was on him. He was watching the runback and the ref didn't see him and ran into him. Pat Moorer handed Charlie a note that said, "See you in the pit tomorrow morning."

All-in-all, what stood out to me the most was that this team FINISHED. Yeah, it was dicey at times – especially letting nd go on a 21 point run. But, if this was last year, it's a loss.

2015

Hopefully, this 2016 team will be able continue what they started tonight. HOOK 'EM!

[P Michael Dickson averaged 54 yards on 6 punts with a long of 64]

• Shane Buechele’s 72-yard pass TD is tied for the 4th longest by a freshman QB in Texas history.
• Buechele finished 16-for-26 with 313 yards of total offense.
• Tyrone Swoopes rushed for 53 yards and three touchdowns, including the game winner in the second overtime. He is now seventh in QB rushing yards in school history with 854 and tied for third among QBs with 20 rushing touchdowns.
• John Burt led the Longhorns in receiving yards with 111, including the 72-yard TD from Shane Buechele in the third quarter. It was Burt’s second career 100-yard receiving game.
• D’Onta Foreman led the Longhorns in rushing with 131 yards. He scored his first TD of the season in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard rush. It was his fifth career 100-yard rushing game.
• Chris Nelson made a career-high 8 tackles in the game, more than doubling his previous career-best (3).
• Jerrod Heard finished with 2 catches for 73 yards in his first game as a wide receiver. His 68-yard reception in the second quarter was longer than 90 of his 92 completions from a season ago.
• Sheroid Evans made one tackle in the game. It was his first appearance since October 3, 2013 at Iowa State making for a total of 1,068 days between starts.
• Jake Oliver made a career-high three catches for 36 yards. His 5-yard catch in the first quarter was the first of his career. He followed it with 21-yard completion and a 10-yard completion in the second quarter.

Super, super post Godz....thats why I always like your thoughts.....Here are some of mine:

We won the game. We won the game that most of the country did not think we would win. That speaks volumes ...We were able to establish a between the tackles run game that most experts deemed impossible. It was playing into ND's strength. One could even say we abused them there. We established the deep pass....we established the slant. We established that we can move the ball.

Defense...we gave up lots of points. What many are ignoreing is why or how.

1. !0 of those points came in overtime...everyone scores in overtime.Everyone.We gave
up 7 points due to a red zone INT 2 more on a returned extra point. I will take that. I never expected we would shut them out.....Lets not forget that what won the game is that we held them to a FG in overtime.

2. Yeah....we got pushed around......by the best, and biggest O line in college football.

3. ND averaged starting on their 44 yd line....that is a huge advantage....against our starting on our own 24.

Special teams.....mixed bag is all I can say....We give up too many return yards. Way too many....Traylor needs to clean that up. The fact that we once again screwed up an extra point that was crucial is scary at best. It may be that our punter is too damned good. Apparantly we can not cover as deep as he punts( nobody playing football at any level punts for a 54 yd average....crazy)

This was a showcase game and we showcased....bigtime.Perhaps being an underdog is an advantageous position to be in , but being an underdog means you are expected to lose.

My God...think of it...there could be no more of a big time game and big time spot light than what we had last night and a true freshman played and played with poise. He onlythrew one stupid pass all night( not the int...one in the first half that luckily fell to the ground) I could not be prouder of the whole team.

On punts, maybe he should just hit the sideline with the punt and try for about 45 yds. When your gunners get behind the punt returner, you break the cardinal rule. Both gunners went behind the returner on that long return. Just can't have that happen.

You guys were great fun this week, awesome knowledgeable fans.... Had the pleasure to meet a bunch of you last year in ND. I drive 11 hours every year once or twice to watch my favorite team play. I'm disappointed but not devastated.

Texas has most definitely improved, good luck the rest of the year and beat Ou.

Thank you!

I'm torn about "targeting" rule. As it's written I believe that instance was text book targeting. ND was flagged for targeting last year on a play eerily like that against Temple last year.

All that being stated, What is a DB supposed to do, just allow the receiver to make the catch? But the rule as written, imo perfectly fits that play. That was a huge point in the game.

It was just one play, in a game with hundreds. Texas won, Congratulations and good luck and thank you for the kind words.

Just watched the replay. Texas kid lead with his shoulder, not the helmet, but he did make contact with the receivers helmet. If he had lead with the helmet, it would have been an easy call. The helmets hit simultaneous with the shoulder, so not sure how they call that. It's not clear from the rule. I will say, Texas kid did exactly as you are coached. Turn and lay the wood with the shoulder. Not sure what else you want him to do in that situation except hit lower so you never touch his head. Even that can be hard because the receiver is trying to get down so it's not like the receiver is stationary.

I get that, and this is not in any way to make excuses or diminish Texas win. All I'm saying is in the past ND has been called for targeting on plays very similar to that play.

2015 vs Temple, Elijah Shumate, was eerily similar to the play last night. And Third vs Pittsburgh.

Again, congratulations on a impressive win.

kwsusmc....I did not think that was targeting as I thought targeting had to be lead with the head...also, the receiver was knocked forward just before contact with our other guy. Had I been Kelly, I would have raised all kinds of hell about the receiver being down before the fumble...for some reason, no one questioned that.

On the other hand I did not see how holding was not called against ND on that last big punt return since the ND guy had such a big wad of our guys jersey in his fist.

All in all, I thought it was pretty well called gamewise....good luck to yall going forward.

I think this hit was what (eventually) took Haines out of the game. Sure hope he's okay. Charlie said in today's presser that he would probably be fine, but he and the other wounded were currently being looked at by the trainers.

Targeting is hitting above the shoulders with your shoulder or head. The receiver has to catch the ball all the way through to be a catch...that is why when they have a foot in and then land out of bounds it matters if they are controlling the ball as they land out of bounds.

Holding is my biggest pet peeve in football. Too me holding is holding and it doesn't matter where you grab them. If you have 2 handfuls of jersey it is a penalty. This needs to be called to start giving defenses a chance in these games. Offenses have all the advantages it seems...can't touch the receivers.....can't hit them anymore.....speed of the game is dictated by the offense.....offensive lineman can hold as long as it is (your guess is as good as mine)......refs could call holding nearly every play. I think some rules need to be used to help the defenses out some.

Who had the best rushing average for Texas on the night?

Buechele, Shane
5 Att / 33 Gain / 0 Loss / 33 Net / 1 TD / 14 Lg / 6.6 Avg

And one of those rushes was a QB sneak for 1 yard.

Yeah, no sacks and one throw-away with our OL verses the mighty Irish DL. I think our boys did pretty good overall.

Today's Charlie PC:

What's missing is the player interviews afterwards. Boyette was first, followed by Shane.

Catch the replay on LHN (it'll be shown 37 times in the next two days) and you'll see and hear that same poise Boo showed during the game.
