Offense:
I thought we were improved across the board. I think Ewers's hiccups at the beginning were more a result of the play calling. I wish we would have fed Bijan a little more, other than that, it was a good showing, imo.

Defense:
I thought our secondary was the weak link. Our DL got pressure on the QB without blitzing. Decent tackling. Very nice overall.

What did you think about Ewers? I thought he was as good as advertised. This kid could be special.

It is like several people have said, but I got to see for myself. He made some good throws and made it look easy. I didn't like his first series. It is human nature for any freshman to try to force things or do too much, but Sark should have ran the ball more or call some more basic plays-at least to ease him into the flow of things. Nonetheless, he recovered nicely.

I was late in watching. So late in fact that Card just came in when I tuned in. .....Scared the crap out of me!
All I could think of watching Card was how much trouble we are in if Ewers really had as much trouble winning the job as we were led to believe by the crack reporters covering the Longhorns.

Does Card ever pass the ball, or do they just call a sack in the huddle? His game is ugly as a mans ass!

Not terrible.

Ewers threw that first pick because he was sh!tting his britches early in his first start. It's called "being a freshman".

He followed it up with going 7 for 7. But for a brief moment, he had more interceptions than he did completions.

Welcome to college football.

Kid had a decent night. A good night for a freshman. A really good night for a freshman in his first start.

We will find out what he's made of next week.
If he plays like Garrett Gilbert did in Jan 2010-- we will get crushed.

Fun facts--

Did you know in that game that Texas out gained Bama in total yards by 13?

Anybody want to guess ours vs their yards? Don't look it up. Guess.

We had
276
They had
263

They threw for 91 yards.
We had 209.
They were 2-12 on 3rd down.
We were 6-17.

We had 5 turnovers-- 4 of them were ints thrown by Gilbert. They had 2.

Gilbert both kept us in the game, and also gave it away.

We are going to find out who Ewers is in 7 days.
It will be in spectacular fashion-- one way, or the other.

I think we are better at almost every position on offense than we were last season. Ewers is young but he’s going to be a huge upgrade over Casey from last season.

Our first team offensive line looked really good I thought. Banks and Hutson were as good as advertised.

Defensively it was hard to get a good read because they were such a bad team. But I thought the defensive line and LBs looked more active.

All in all we will find out a whole lot more about this team next Saturday. I still think this is an 8-9 win team though.

It was really easy to see why Ewers beat Card out. Outside of his first drive he was poised and made all the right reads. He was a lot better than Card was. His pocket presence is night and day above what Card’s is.

Hard to assess our OL from this game. We will learn a lot about them on Saturday. If Banks can at least hold his own with Will Anderson, we should be ecstatic.

Did Campbell get in the game with the 2nd Oline last night? I don't remember seeing him.

He played the last drive or 2. I remember seeing him out there really late in the 4th.

This is only from the 10 minute highlight clip on YouTube.
Pumping sunshine is that our scheme was brilliant caused confusion and that was the reason guys were wide open. However the offense looked pretty vanilla for this game. The truth is they were just bad lots of those highlight plays were on blown assignments.

Ewers looks good. I wouldn't call him a dual threat but he is very mobile in the pocket and can throw the ball very accurately from different release angles. But he is going to throw multiple pics against Bama next week. You could argue that he was threading the needle through tight windows. It looked like there were some forced throws and our receivers won the 1 on 1. Not going to happen with Bama

Our OL is better, but I am pretty sure there will be a white jersey with red numbers in our backfield on a high percentage of our offensive plays. Our freshman qb will feel hell like never before. We’ll see if he can be smart with the ball and throw balls out of bounds rather than taking sacks or interceptions by trying to force it. If he can do that, I’ll take it.

So Texas WR's can't or wont win any 1x1 battles against Bama?

I said this in another thread but Ewers reminds me of Aaron Rodgers. He can just flick the ball effortlessly and it comes out like a rocket. He has an absolute cannon and it’s exciting to watch. He is probably the best qb Texas has had since Colt. Huge talent upgrade from what we’re used to.

I read somewhere that Ewers has great short term memory for a qb. He can make a mistake and then forget about it on the next play, as evidenced by the INT and then going 7-7 after. If Card had thrown that INT on the first drive, I have a feeling he would have lost confidence and thrown more INT’s.

Ya I disagree with that pretty strongly. I don’t think we will win the game but guys like Xavier Worthy and Jatavion Sanders are more than capable of beating the Bama DBs 1 on 1. I’m not as worried about the offense. It’s our defense that worries me the most. I still think we put up 28 or so points.

There were throws that were completions this week that will be pics next week.
Possibly, but our team is high talent/low expectation and everyone is assuming an "L" this week for Texas. This is the perfect spot for a statistical outlier.

Was the Joe Burrow LSU team better than this Alabama team? Yes

Does this Texas team have more talent than the team that lost by 7 to that LSU team? Yes

Does the current Texas team have a dipshit coach? No

The Alabama game will be a good barometer game for Texas. Texas has nothing to lose in this game, as we're basically given no chance to win. Just hope that the Horns can keep the score respectable, learn, and come out injury-free.
I think if Texas plays up tempo and fast, we have a chance. Might be a good game to showcase Ewers’ wheels. Bama has always had trouble with mobile qbs.

What common sense I do have tells me Texas loses, but 2009 is screaming for justice. That Colt McCoy injury was a bit dirty in the NT game. IDK but there has been some pressure building since that game. 100k+ fans will certainly help.
For sure we are better off this year. Talent is better, depth is better. Some things will help us. Home game, early start time, D-line rotation in the heat. There are things that I am also really concerned about. The first is #5 on Defense. I think he gets picked on quite a bit next week. The other is Ewers getting fooled by the Bama D.

ULM fooled our Oline a few times. Bama won't have to fool them. If Bama comes out in man coverage, we'll know what their opinion of us is.

I 2nd that motion on getting thru injury free! Especially, at LB.

Yep, but I do hope that the majority of the media continues to write this game off as an easy Bama win.

If Banks, Hutson, Murphy, Sorrell, and Finkley come out on Saturday and represent themselves fairly against what they are about to face, I'm going to take the moral victory and move on to UTSA.

I just want to see how well we can match up with them in the trenches.

Pretty safe to bet they will and should.

I really loved what I saw overall. There was quite a bit more effort given by everyone and very little quitting on plays.

I think it was a long punt return or was it the pick.....anyways, there were many guys prime for illegal blocks but they all used their bodies to get in the way instead. Excellent coaching imo. Last year would have been raining flags.

Tons of improvement but we're another year away from top competition and that's ok. We're actually seeing development at UT folks. Twilight zone.

There actually was a flag on that play, but it was against ULM. I noticed the same… kudos to special teams for not clipping/block in the back, which is called more often than not on a play like that.

Jeff Banks is an excellent special teams and tight ends coach. You can see the development from both groups. Outside of the kicking game out special teams might win us an extra game or 2 this season.

I'll be happy with STs not costing a game. Definitely need to work on catching the ball for field goals & punts, that was rough.

Overall, it looked like we simply played smarter ball with only 5 penalties. Hopefully that trend continues because I can't stomach another year averaging 90 penalty yds/game.

I think they need to move Card back to the holder on FGs. Then Pearson needs to get on the jugs machine and work on those hands.
