Here are a few notes from Wednesday's portion of spring football practice open to the media:

- It was a shorts and helmets day with no shoulder pads, and there were no drills that occurred during the media window that were of a team setting, but a few things can be gleaned by who was working where and in what capacity.

- The same guys who were out with injuries to start spring football on Monday remained out. The players off to the side who took part in team stretch, etc. but did not work out once the practice started were again Jonathan Brooks, Isaiah Neyor (who, on a positive note, I did see doing a little jogging and not looking hobbled), Keilan Robinson, Jaylon Guilbeau and Derrion Gullette.

- The OL groupings remained the same as Monday with the starting OL of LT Kelvin Banks, LG Hayden Conner, C Jake Majors, RG DJ Campbell and RT Christian Jones while the second group remained LT Payton Kirkland, LG Neto Omeozulu, C Sawyer Goram-Welch, RG Malik Agbo and RT Cam Williams.

- That second OL group might feature the two most massive offensive tackles I've ever seen on a college football team. If Payton Kirkland is being groomed to take over for Kelvin Banks after two more seasons, Texas is going to have an absolute behemoth left tackle on its hands.

- We didn't get any pursuit drills to give us any idea of how the defensive depth chart stacks up, but we can certainly draw context clues based on how groups were deployed in position drills and the order they went in, etc.

- Among the interior defensive line, it seems like T'Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy are the traditional starters, but Alfred Collins seems very involved and looks likely to be as big a participant as either one (backups play as many or more snaps than starters for the Horns based on usage over the last two seasons). What's more, Collins has clearly taken on more of a leadership role with his group. Sweat is a vocal guy, but in a little more of a manner that is clowning around. Byron Murphy is a little more quiet. Collins needs to make a bigger impact this year when he's on the field, so it gives some hope that he's feeling confident enough in himself to sort of take on more of a vocal role as a leader. From the looks of things to start, Vernon Broughton will probably be fourth in the pecking order.

- The front seven did some things during walk-throughs before practice started with Collins lining up at one defensive end, Sweat and Murphy in the middle and Barryn Sorrell on the other edge. Seems like a good that we'll see that in heavy packages for run downs as guys like Justice Finkley, etc. aren't proven edge-setters.

- Speaking of Finkley, it feels like he has definitely moved over to the other edge. Whereas he used to work out with the interior line guys (Barryn Sorrell still does much of the time) he now works with the LB and buck-end types during those drills. The two guys set to push him the most appear to be the two ex-Westlake players No.91 Ethan Burke and No.92 Colton Vasek who take reps behind Finkley in that order for now.

- Seeing Burke and Vasek stand together, Burke does look like he's one-inch taller as claimed on the roster (6-6 for Burke, 6-5 for Vasek) but Vasek truly doesn't look 20 pounds lighter (250 listed for Burke, 230 for Vasek). Their physical profiles and BMIs look much more similar than those weight numbers would indicate.

- People were asking about Jaray Bledsoe and whether or not he has put on the weight to move inside, but he's still working out with the ends, and I wouldn't be surprised if he stays there. He's listed at 266 pounds this spring and that weight looks fine on him.

- The way that the corners are getting worked is interesting. They seem to work in two groups: one is Ryan Watts, Terrence Brooks and Malik Muhammad. The other is Jahdae Barron, Gavin Holmes and Austin Jordan. X'Avion Brice mainly works with the Barron group, but he did move from group to group during different portions of practice. I don't know why they are broken up like this, but my guess is that it is divided by guys slated to play boundary corner (the short side of the field -- Watts, Brooks, Muhammad) and those slated to play field corner (the wide side of the field - Barron, Holmes, Jordan, Brice). The reason I think this could be the case is because Watts was the primary boundary corner last year and there is no way Holmes (who is small) is going to play anything but field. The only issue with this is that Terrence Brooks was good last season playing on the field side, and it would be a shame to relegate him to being Watts' backup after he's shown a lot of ability to play on the field side. Brooks is big and long, and phsyical though, which typically is more of a boundary corner profile. We also know (at least I think we know) that Barron is going to play nickel in most situations, leaving that field corner spot a lot less seasoned personnel-wise without him. We'll have a more clear understanding of how the pecking order at CB is likely to shape up through the rest of camp when/if we get to take in any semblance of a true team drill.

- At the inside linebacker spots, the first two linebackers up in all the position drills today were Jaylan Ford and David Gbenda. The duo directly behind them was Anthony Hill and Morice Blackwell. Hill and Blackwell will seemingly have the opportunity through spring to overtake Gbenda, but it is Blackwell as of now who technically seems to be practicing more at Gbenda's exact position.

- Finally, here are a few one-on-one drills that took place as media was being escorted out of practice that I made note of:

Malik Muhammad commits a hold on Xavier Worthy and gets chewed out

JT Sanders beat Kitan Crawford badly but the ball was badly overthrown

Jordan Whittington with a beautiful vertical route and catch vers Jahdae Barron

Ryan Watts beats Casey Cain, Cain had a shot but dropped it

Johntay Cook runs a terrible route against Terrence Brooks, never had a chance

Larry Turner-Gooden beats Gunnar Helm

Xavier Worthy works Jerrin Thompson

AD Mitchell is deceptive with his gears to throw off Gavin Holmes and get loose for a nice play

CJ Baxter makes easy work of Anthony Hill on an option route
