yes we have solid commit from Westlake QB,but we need to recruit this QB from Lone Star HS, he is committed to Utah, very athletic and great arm..Game on now live from Ford Center..Tired of letting to QB KIDS leaving our state!
Shelly is 5'11" and 170lbs.
In case you missed it Westlake with Ehlinger beat #1 Katy last night. Westlake had 32 points. Katy shutout 10 teams last year.
Doug F was 5ft 6, looking for depth and kids with heart? Yes kid from Westlake is great, players get hurt, things change. UT has historically recruited bad at this position % wise...
Flute didn't play in the era of 325lbs 6'-5" guys that run sub 5.0 in the 40. Today's LBs would have been DLs in his era.
We are extremely tight on scholarship numbers for the '17 class. The staff isn't taking any depth/project QBs for '17. Look for two in the '18 class.
Fluttie could have played in any era, cause he was
Winner and played with heart. BTW Shelly is 6ft and growing, wowner why Ohio State is after him if he is to small? This exactly the reason we have sucked at QB recruiting with this attitude. Passed on Drew Brees, RG 3, the all pro from NFl...many others because we want an replacement type like McCoy and Major..Football has changed and we need QB's with speed and elusiveness..not saying Westlake kid is not top recruit but we need depth...Shelly would fill that void...

How about Andrew Luck?
I saw an interview with him here in Indy where he said he visited Texas & had them in his top three but never received an offer?
495 yards yesterday and hejust simply no...my kid has played against Jason Shelley every year since he was 7...kids has decent wheels but is small..he has an arm but his accuracy is terrible...just no
No. We missed on Brees, Griffin, and others. And so did most of the nation. Brees went to freaking Purdue. UH was about the only team in on Griffin and Briles left to BU and took him with him. You know who else whiffed on them...Saban, Stoops, Carroll, Meyer, Miles, Holz, etc.
No idea what a "replacement type like McCoy and Major" even means. Brees and Major are about as close of a comparison to each other as it gets, oh and Brees came before Major and McCoy so I'm glad our coaches were in with Madame Cleo. Griffin is a VY clone and its not like the staff wasn't looking for guys like that (see Pryor, Swoopes, etc). We got Gilbert. We went after guys like Stafford and Mallett. We got others who didn't work out and transferred elsewhere. Hindsight is 20/20. Its not like we just haven't been trying to find a QB since Brees came out of HS in the late 90s.
With hundreds upon hundreds of D1 football players graduating high school from the state of TX each and every year............simple math says we can't get them all and we will miss on plenty. Not to mention not all of them want to come here. Nor are many a good fit.
Would this kid even want to come to UT and compete with Buechele and Ehlinger among other young QBs we have???
I mean cry me a river, even if we offer and the kid chooses on his own not to come here.....fickle fans will cry and act like our coaches are morons. Simple math. We can't get em all. Not even close.
You should..Dude you are on a roll......you rewatched the TEXAS/ND game and have me convinced we should just forfeit the game and now I'm thinking we should pull Ehlingers scholarship offer and offer this guy I've never heard of!!!! Man I would follow you to the end of the earth if I had a chance...
Believe me, we have been through and through this discussion over the last few years and have given Mack Brown several verbal black eyes. We pretty much all agree with what you are saying. The quarterback drought we have had is horrendous. But, the "list" that has been discussed on misses by Mack are Luck, RG3, Manziel, and even Winston. Other than Manziel, who know how high our chances were with the others. Mack put all of his eggs into Garrett Gilbert's basket.I agree on some the points, but that is not the point.,The point is we need to constantly be recruiting QB's that fit our offense, Ohio State built depth at QB and we should do the same..

Agreed I like your thought process.I'd say that is exactly what the staff is doing. And it is what every staff does, every single year.
Look, we have changed our O. We need to settle on an O before we can settle on a Qb that fits our O.
Laziness in recruiting was one of Macks biggest downfalls. The other big mistake was he was enamored with Bama's smashmouth game and he tried to overnight turn a spread team in to a smashmouth team. He miscast personnel at OL, QB, RB, and WRs and a style that Greg Davis had recruited for over a decade.......and we dominated with for most of that decade.....and he overnight tried to fit a square peg in to a round hole. He then fired Greg, scrapped the new O, and now with a hodge podge of different Offensive style recruits, he went back to the spread with different lackluster OCs and the wrong personnel. Rinse, wash, repeat....he kept playing catchup not settling on an O and not having the right players to run whatever new style he was changing to after that.
Charlies biggest mistake (and I thought it from day 1) was also being loyal to his OC Watson. Wrong guy, wrong place, with the wrong offense. We were initially sold on OL coach from OSU being our OC, then told Co-OCs, and by the first game Watson was calling the plays and he essentially backdoored him in to the job that very few thought he was qualified to do. I also think he should have aggressively gotten at least one more QB to compete with Swoopes over the past few years. No excuses, but he is playing catch up himself. His saving grace is I think he is finally figuring it out.
But to do what you say we need to do.....first we need an established O in place, then you get the recruits to follow suit and join that O. Chicken meet egg.
