Long day, and I'll have more detailed reports from these guys in the coming days, but here are some quick-hitter notes from today's camp ...
OL Kam Dewberry is making some sort of announcement next Saturday, but he wouldn’t say what it’s going to be. He said it could be top schools, could be an actual commitment. If it’s the latter (I’m not really expecting that), I don’t think it would be Texas. Oklahoma and A&M are in a good spot here and he really likes Ohio State. I do think Texas and Kyle Flood have put Texas squarely in the mix, just feels like Flood came in playing from behind after Herb Hand didn’t make Dewberry a priority. Dewberry did point out to me that he’s been to the UT campus more than any other place, and he said that to point out to me that his interest in Texas is stronger than people realize. Jeff Banks is helping on this one as well.
OL Kelvin Banks has all five of his OVs set up – Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, LSU and Oregon. He told me today he’s genuinely open among those five schools but I still feel this one comes down to UT or A&M. Banks was damn good today in the reps I saw. Maybe the best player I watched. Some people I’ve talked to think A&M, but he grew up a hard-core Texas fan and the UT staff has done a really good job here. Maalik Murphy has been in his ear a bit.
Texas has some serious work to do for 2023 WR Jalen Hale. Oklahoma, Alabama and Ohio State are his top three. He told me Texas would probably be sixth on his list. He has been in touch with Sarkisian recently and said UT can climb his list if they play well in the fall and if he builds a good relationship with the Texas staff, but right now Texas has quite a bit of ground to make up.
Cole Hudson has official visits set for Texas, OU and Texas A&M. Still working on setting up his other two. He said those first three visits will be big because if he doesn’t fall in love with one of those three, he may schedule a couple others for the fall or something. He’s pretty open, but I mentioned to him that I’ve heard through the grapevine that Texas is in a pretty good spot, maybe even the team to beat. He didn’t confirm that suspicion, but did say that Texas is very high on his list. I still feel this is one the Longhorns can win. He actually got to watch the UT practice from Saturday via FaceTime (not sure how that works, but I want in on that).
DL Chris McClellan was terrific today. Took home DL MVP honors. He’s not hearing much from Texas other than some occasional mailers, but said he’d definitely be interested if UT picks up its interest. Not sure what Texas’ chances would be since it’s a bit late, but he’d at least listen and an offer is probably a good idea.
2023 OL Harris Sewell was fantastic today. Of all the OL/DL, I’d put him right up there with Kelvin Banks from what he showed today. Super nice kid, but plays with a bit of a nasty streak and is ultra-competitive. He’ll visit Texas in June (11-13), the same weekend as Rueben Owens and Arch Manning. He’s pretty open but in talking to him, I’m not sure I’d put any team ahead of Texas.
Texas A&M DE commitment Anthony James said he’s still hearing from a few schools, including Texas, but he seems pretty locked in with his decision. He did say he might take a visit to Texas this summer, but doesn’t have anything set up at this time. Long way to go in this one since he’s 2023 and Texas will have to recruit him and his family to have a chance.
DE Jadon Scarlett was a bit undersized but he was really, really good today. Very quick and elusive in pass rush drills, had no problem getting off blocks and beating his man in the reps I watched. He’s been in touch with Sark and Bo Davis. The Longhorns are in the mix, but he wants to take things really slowly, so we’ll see how that plays out. No official visits set, doesn’t plan on deciding until late in the process. He did say if he had a list, Texas would be near the top.
OL Jacob Sexton has a Texas official visit set up for this summer. He said he’s still working a few things out but pretty much has his five visits penciled in. Didn’t want to disclose those just yet but UT is definitely one. Likes the UT staff, including coach Flood and what Flood did at Bama.
Recent UT offer Jeremy Patton said he and his family were pretty much doing backflips when he got the Texas offer, so that’s pretty telling. He doesn’t have an actual list of favorites, but said Texas would be way up there for him based on his and his family’s feelings about the Longhorns. LSU’s another school that’s going to be a factor in this one.
Not much happening with UT and Katy WR Nicholas Anderson. He was talking to Mike Yurcich under the previous staff but said he’s not hearing much from Texas these days.
