Apologies for getting these out late. After hitting a rain-filled spring game I had to race to my son's rain-filled baseball game. Long day. Anyway, here are some comments from players who were able to make it in for the game ...
DB Chevin Calloway - Dallas Bishop Dunne - "It was great. The coaches were great and I like what they are doing."
I then asked if today's visit helped UT's chances, or if things were pretty much the same.
"It helps," he said.
DB Anthony Cook (2018) - Houston Lamar - "It was great. I loved the atmosphere and the DBs had a pretty good day. I can see myself playing there in the near future."
Cook said he didn't get a chance to talk to the coaches about an offer, but feels one could be presented soon.
"We didn't get a chance to sit down and talk with the coaches but we did speak. I feel that I will possibly receive an offer soon."
DE Taquon Graham - Temple - "It was great talking to the coaches and to talk to other recruits and players."
TE Major Tennison - Bullard - "I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed getting to talk to coaches and other recruits."
LB Mohamed Sanogo - Plano West - "It was great. I saw really good things on the defensive side. I enjoyed the visit."
LB Levi Jones - Austin Westlake - "I enjoyed the game a lot. I think they looked very good. I had a good time talking to all the other recruits."
ATH Jordan Moore (2018) - Yoakum - "I loved it. The game was awesome. Texas is one of the best places in the country, one of my favorites!"
ATH Joshua Moore (2018) - Yoakum - "It was amazing! The atmosphere was crazy. The game was very intense all the way through. Like I said before, man UT is a special place! They never fail to impress me."
QB Sam Ehlinger - Austin Westlake - "It was great. The offense looks a lot more polished and I'm excited for the fall."
DB Kobe Boyce - Lake Dallas - "The spring game was fun. Even though it was cancelled (early) I had a great time."
--- Some tweets of interest from recruits ...
--- A few quick-hitter thoughts from the spring game ...
- You all don't me to break it down because I'm pretty sure everyone who watched saw the same thing, but Shane Buechele is the starting quarterback of this team.
I'm usually the guy who takes an overly cautious approach and tells people "it's just one practice" but the gap between him and Swoopes today, in the most important practice of the spring, was just too significant to ignore.
The coaches gave us exactly what you'd expect after the scrimmage - coachspeak saying no decisions have been made, one practice doesn't trump all the others, etc. But this one needs to be decided. Go with the young pup and look to the future.
- It pains me to write that Buechele needs to be given the job, because I have an enormous amount of respect for Tyrone Swoopes. Covering these guys as recruits, you get to know them a bit and Swoopes is genuinely one of the classiest kids I've covered in more than 15 years on this beat. He's the type of person I want to see well, because I like seeing good things happen to good people. But I just can't spin it any other way ... Buechele pretty much locked down the top spot today.
- I have a feeling Swoopes and those close to him know that today was a devastating hit to Swoopes' QB career. I talked to someone tonight who said you could read in the body language of those close to Swoopes that Saturday couldn't have gone much worse.
- Overall, there were enough big plays that I can see where fans would have come out of this game with a high outlook for 2016, but I'm a little torn.
I need to review the game replay but there wasn't much 1s vs. 1s that I remember (if at all) and I would have like to have seen more dominance from the first-team OL and DL against a group of back-ups with zero depth.
Buechele's presence makes me think there's a chance UT could catch lightning in a bottle, but overall today didn't do too much to change my overall impression of this team.
- If today was any indication, everyone better get ready for some four-hour games in the fall. My goodness, that first half took forever.
- Antwuan Davis got a lot of work at nickel today and has quietly had a very productive spring. He had a couple INTs in one of the earlier scrimmages and had another today (may have hit the ground?).
- Charles Omenihu has had a great spring and he capped it off with a productive day today. Texas needed him to step up in a big way and he's done just that.
- Chris Warren is a freaking beast. When he gets up a head of steam, defenders just want to get the hell out of his way.
- Speaking of the above, John Bonney's tackle attempt on Warren's TD ... what was that?
- Again, I need to rewatch the game because I had one eye on the recruits section in the stands when I was at the stadium, but I can only remember one or two times when the QBs actually surveyed the field and went through their progressions. That's not a bad thing because I'm pretty sure it's by design ... I just found it interesting.
- I was a little surprised to see Sheroid Evans struggling with coverage downfield along the sideline. That's one area, covering fly patterns downfield, that I would have thought would have been his strength.
- I was hoping to see some more shots to Collin Johnson but no worries there ... his time will come soon enough.
- Lastly, the highlight of my day. Wife and daughters are out of town so I got to catch up on some father-son time.
