Well we've really gotten to the point where we are now watching TX wins from a long time ago for entertainment. Therefore I give you the 2001 Holiday Bowl between TX/WA.

Some background. A month before the Longhorns suffered a truly devastating loss to CO in the Big XII title game. Only a loss to GA in the CB was worse than this. But in that game Major Applewhite came off the bench to try and save the game but came up a couple points short. And although he hadn't started a game in 2 years because of injuries he was named the starter in the HB.

Now to the game. Believe it or not there was no scoring in the 1rst quarter. In the 1rst half MA threw 3 interceptions one a pick 6. But then the Longhorns scored on a couple of td passes to go ahead 14/13 late in the 2nd quarter. But then WA scored 10 points to go ahead 23/14 at the half.

The third quarter was a terrible one for the horns and at the 3 mark it was 36/17 WA. But here's where it got intense. The Longhorns scored on 4 straight possessions to come back for a second time to go up 40/36. The last td was set up on an interception by a freshman lb named Derrick Johnson. But then WA whose previous possessions were punts scored on a td with 90 seconds to go to make it 43/40.

But on the final possession Major Applewhite took the Longhorns to the end zone to go ahead for good 47/43. The horns held on downs and MA took a knee on the final play. We came from 13, 19, and 3, points at the time it was the greatest come from behind victory in school history.

Looking back Greg Davis actually called a good game. Her finally made use of Matt Trissell who caught a few passes one of them a td and he did the same with Brett Robin. Bo Scaife dropped 3 passes in the first half but stepped up his game in the 2nd half. Roy Williams had a good game. But it was mostly BJ Johnson and Ivan Williams. BJ dropped 3 passes in the end zone in the same HB the year before a game we lost by 5 points. But in this one he caught everything they threw to him including the one that set up the winning td. In this game Cedric Cedric Benson, RIP brother, didn't play. Ivan Williams who Davis could never figure out how to use finally got a chance to play and shined brightly. Finally there was MA. It was his last game as horn and it was without question his finest hour.

With that win the TX Longhorns finished in the top 10 for the 1rst time in 18 years. Think about that one for a minute. I have this rated at #5 on Mack Brown's biggest wins at TX.

I was dating a girl at the time who's family had deep ties to Texas---- her daddy was at the game and had invited us to fly out to the game-- but we passed. Just before the game she asked me what would happen (because she was a Simms fan and obviously Major was playing) and I told her "Cedric is out so major is going to have to throw for 400+ for us to win."

Now I'm going to check the stat line for the game-- ya--- Major threw for 473 yards that game. Greatest, luckiest pre-game prediction of my life. I should have quit there.

Chris Simms career was defined by two things. The inability (not his fault) to beat blOwU and the loss to Colorado. I've ways wondered what would have happened with him if he decided to stick with his original commitment to Tennessee? Texas had Major for 3 more years, he wouldn't have had near the issues from fans that he got at Texas. He probably would have gotten better coaching at Tennessee than he got at Texas from Greg Davis. He also might have had a better NFL career.

As for that game, I can honestly say I was expecting us to get blown out and I was ready for mack to have the same career as Mackovic. Between the way we lost to Oregon the year before in the Holiday bowl and losing to Colorado, I thought we were just cursed.

I said I ranked this game at #5 on Mack Brown's biggest wins at TX. Here's my top 5.

1. SC
2. MI these first 2 are no brainers and should be everyone's top 2.
3. OK 2008. Hey it's OK and they were ranked #1 at the time.
4. tOSU 2005. A couple of blue bloods meeting for the first time ever. There was a years worth of hype going into the game and it lived up to its billing. Instant classic
5. WA 2001

There were a lot of games that could have been ranked #5. But looking back this was the game that proved we can win a NC under Mack Brown. We had some tough Iosses between this game and the SC game but we finally got there. It's embarrassing that we went 18 years without finishing in the top ten and this game broke the steak. And that is why I rank it #5.

I'm going to say Nebraska 98 was much bigger, it set the stage for Ricky winning the Heisman and Texas having the #1 recruiting class that year.

I'd probably put Aggy 98 to be much bigger as well. Ricky's run to glory, and the way he did it with style still sends shivers up my spike.

1. SC - National Championship - no brainer
2. Michigan - Rose Bowl, first BCS win - no brainer

Agree on both of those

3. Nebraska 98 - a win to build on and gave credibility to Mack
4. Mizzou 04 - shit was about to get real bad for Mack if they lost that game at home
5. tie Ohio State/Oklahoma 05 - "the shoe at night" and ending OU's five game win streak on the way to a National title.
