Today marks 16 years since Capt Pate was Killed by an IED while conducting combat operations with an Iraqi Army patrol. Two other Marine SSgts (advisors) were on the patrol with him. When the IED detonated the SSgts were essentially standing on it, both men suffered the loss of their legs. Capt Pate was hit by a chunk of shrapnel that just missed his side plate and entered his chest, it was a catastrophic injury. Chris had the presence of mind to call for a reaction force but was dead when they arrived. Both SSgts survived due to Capt Pates actions.
This was 2d ANGLICOs second deployment in two years, the Captains second as well. Being a reservist he did not have to be on that deployment but volunteer to go back because the three members of his Fire Power Control Team (he was a JTAC) were going back and he didn’t want to abandon them.
The world is a lesser place without him. RIP brother, you are not forgotten.
