NOBODY, but nobody could get a team more ready to play that first game of the season better than Akers. His first two years he opened with # 1 Auburn which sported Bo Jackson.....one of the GOATs. Both times we contained Bo and rolled em.

Akers' problem was he was so arrogant he made Herman look like a shrinking violet. In the end that caused him to not be able to recruit at all. One ill advised punt return gone wrong cost him and us the '83 Natty.

For all of his faults he really was a good guy. Over the years I've sympathized with Fred Akers. He had to succeed a legend that was never going to lose another game. Succeeding a legend is very tough and I wish I'd of realized that when he was there. I didn't like that DKR fanatics worked hard to keep him out of the Hall of Honor. But he finally was inducted in 2015. Sadly his son preceded him in death. My thoughts to his wife and surviving children. Here's to you Fred.

When he was inducted into Hall of Honor 5 years ago I listened to his speech. I could see that he was in the early stages of dementia. He would talk then there would be pauses but he was still coherent enough to finish his speech. I say this because he was suffering from dementia for 10 years and spent his last few years in a facility that specialized in memory loss. Sad way to leave the world at least he's not suffering anymore.

He had a lousy w/l record in bowl games but did you ever check out Bo Schembechler's record? Or Woody Hayes in his final years? That one's for you Herbstreit. And speaking of tOSU how about John Cooper's record in bowl games. Try 2/11 with far more talent than Akers team and that's saying a lot when you consider how talented those FA teams were. That's another one for you Herbstreit. And hey didn't you play qb for JC?

But here's one great thing that Akers accomplished. In 10 years against Barry Switzer he was 5/4/1. Nobody else did that against Switzer.

There's a couple articles by Kirk Bohls and Ced Golden where they paid a nice tribute to him. I don't know if clob will read this but clob did you ever get a chance to meet the man?
