Ro Jo Wildcat?

There is always more to the story, I am not concerned about who they play, I trust they have reasons for who and why they play. Here is a good example: A lot of posters are negative about why 52 plays back up role versus 50. If you pay close attention to 3rd quarter Baylor called a wheel route and 52 covered him up like a blanket although the pressure of our defense swatted the ball down, had that 52 not done is job, and the ball wasn’t swatted down that could have easily turned the game. 50 is in the transfer portal for a reason, it’s not about him getting playing time it’s b/c he gets criticized during practice and instead of him getting better he wants entitlement because he thinks it’s his time and he is getting beat by a walk on. These prima donnas that feel entitled can hit the door as they will have same problem at another top 25 school. He will end up playing for a FCS school. There is so much we don’t to see or understand and we just have to trust they are playing the right kids. Trust me they want the best players on the field.

If Urban comes INwouldn’t be surprised if Johnson is at least in the mix at QB next spring. Feels like he’s got the kind of skill Meyer would have at QB.

Jaquinden Jackson has more of a skill set than Rojo I believe. He is a VY type of guy. Watched a ton of him in high school and he is an absolute stud with a better arm than Rojo.

Last year when my kids and I went to the OU vs Texas game I had told them I expected at least one or two plays where either Rojo (a former QB) either lined up at QB to do a wildcat or they had him on a sweep then he throws to a receiver. 3 times he went out on a wide run and we had all their DBs crashing. I kept saying its about to happen...........never did..........we lost.......left shaking my head........

Generally I agree. However, Wiley needs more targets. Period.

Why not put Ro Jo in the wildcat, pulling Guard out of 12 formation? It works with Sam, Ro Jo can bang linebackers and keep Sam healthy?
My only concerns would be-- is it a run based wildcat? If so, we've got little to no shot. Why? Our offensive line can't block sunlight. If we are running, the safeties simply walk up for run support. Now if RoJo can actually THROW the ball and make them respect his arm, well that's a whole different kettle of fish. But a one dimensional wildcat with a weak offensive line is a recipe for disaster.

If I were an OC and was going to run something like that the first play I called would be a pass. Should loosen it up. Teams don’t throw enough out of the wildcat. It would be more effective if the pass was an actual threat

I get what you are trying to say but you're overthinking it. Sam is a better passer and is also our leading rusher, so why would we put a worse passer in to try and pass it to open up the run? We also have three capable running backs. Clob is right, it's the Oline not the play call or personnel.

I agree, I met Mr. Wiley at the game and old him his son should me the starter. Obviously he was very proud of that but I really believe this, not sure why 80 gets more rep’s. If 11 had not under thrown that one pass that got picked he would have racked up about 130 yards.

Watch the game when we ran a counter play, Okafor pulled and it was blocked to perfection, Sam got about 8 yards. I am just saying I would prefer Ro Jo to run the wildcat and save Sam’s body. while the O line is not performing standards we want there are times when they do a really good job. You have to have your had on the remote and pause and play button.

Valid point.

Brewer is a good player and I guess is a better blocker and/or knows more of the offense? Which would make sense and support your original premise.

But Wiley is a legitimate NFL talent. Split him out, motion him, etc. and get a matchup

I challenge you to watch the game in slow mo, before you write off our blocking abilities, we are inconsistent No doubt, usually late in the game which is why I don’t understand that we don’t rotate our guards and keep them fresh.

I promise you my friend, I've rewound and fast forwarded more than most. I know what I'm looking at and for. I know how to properly grade an offensive lineman usually during the play-- but most certainly after. We miss a chit load of blocks and get beat a ton on the books we do manage to get to.
I know it's been a long time since we've had a bad ass line and I know it's like the old man that used to drink fine scotch but in his later years he's swilling the rock gut. Eventually, chivas regal ends up tasting like Macallan 50 when you haven't had it in forever.

But make no mistake, we haven't had a cohesive and dominant offensive line in a decade. You give me any line from Texas 2000-2009 and this team wins 10 games just running the ball.
But we don't have Leonard Davis anymore. Or Casey Studdard. Or justin blalock.

Let's take it a step further-- we zone block now (mostly). We don't get heavy and come off the ball. Think Nebraska--- Stanford runs a pro style with GT and counter and pulling guards etc. We rarely do that. We occupy and allow the back to pick his hole. That requires a small QUICK back that can hide behind his Line-- or a back that can hit the hole quickly. You can be a thumper back in the zone if you're running down hill. If you're a 220lb back playing fvcking hopscotch in the backfield, you're not going to be doing too hot.

Would a little guy like Hodges Mitchell do well right now? Probably.

I never said we had a dominant O line, never said that, Bama, Clemson, Georgia, ND, they have great lines. I have been telling my son for two years I hate this inside-outside zone blocking schemes. When I coached we ran an un orthodox blocking scheme, where guards and tackles pull power into the designed hole, you are right that we don’t put more bodies at the POA. During the Baylor game we pulled our guards on a counter play and both times we gained over 5 yards. For some reason we don’t attract enough quality kids for the O line. I also think 7-7 has changed TEXAS HS FOOTBAll, and the talented kids go out of state to places like Stanford. We can only work with what we have and I do think our O line has improved week by week. If we put more heavy bodies at the POA, WE WILL RUN THE BALL MUCH BETTER. HOOKEM.

We had the best tackle in the country and the best center in the state basically "born" into their starting role here. And yet, Herman found a way to keep that talent from coming here. It takes lineman like that to get us back where we need to be.

And yes, 7 on 7 has completely fvcked up football in texas.

The problem with RO JO running it is that it will become predictable. When Sam does it, the idea is to catch the defense on their heels.

Obviously Urban coming in gets them to reconsider, but I’d have to think any coach with any kind of credible track recored has a fighting chance of getting them back
