I'm watching this HBO film on Saban and Belichick, very good btw and worth a watch. Saban makes a great point that you don't hire an assistant or coordinator to do what they want, you hire them to do what you want.
I hope that Herman watches it when he's evaluating his choices. His offense does work - he's won national championships and big games with it, his coordinator did not work and neither did his assistant coaches (in certain positions).
I know that Saban and Belichick have more of a right than Herman does to say something like that but at the end of the day, Herman is the one who has to set the tone and messaging in this team. He's the head coach and I think his ability to be a head coach was diminished because he had JV assistants (especially on offense).
It sounds like he's being very patient with his process and who he's evaluating and my hope is that he's not hiring or talking to people about coming and changing the x's and o's. I don't think those were the problem - i think the development, the relationships, the execution, and the game day play calling were the problems. Those are things that assistants are responsible for that allows the 1-0 messaging to trickle down.
Just my two cents that we should all just shut up and let him pick the guy that's going to do their job so he can do his.
Hook em.
