Sam Cosmi

I'm waiting to see I'd he'll quit on his team when the going gets tough like he did when he was with us.

So through the first 3 weeks in the NFL Sam is the highest graded rookie offensive lineman. I remember some guys on here doubting his ability of being a 1st or 2nd round NFL talent ( I won't throw names out).

He graded out poorly in college. Perhaps now you see the frustration that many of us that KNOW what it takes to develop talent in players, have been feeling all these years as we've watched raw kids never reach their potential because of subpar coaching and or entitlement mentalities.

Scouting report. Could have written it myself.

C’mon Cali money is too big to put yourself in a position to get hurt. It was a simple biz decision likely advised by multiple agents and lawyers. Talk of “quitting on your team” is silly. Aside from that it gave others a chance to play and we still kicked ass. Good for Cosmi. Another underrated Longhorn stud.

On fanatic perspective they interviewed an NFL scout who said that Cosmi had one of the worst technique scores they've ever seen. But hey if he turns out to be an NFL starter great. And if he does I hope I never find out where Herb Hand lives.

This is an indictment of Herman and Herb Hand and their inability to develop talent. He was here for 3 seasons and slowly developed. But in less than one full NFL season he’s already the highest rated OL rookie. Clearly exceeding his pre draft scouting profile.

He was the 11th OL taken in the draft. Athletically he should've been one of the first 5. Grade wise, from workouts and what not, he should've been closer to 20.

Blame Herb Hand, not the posters that questioned his ability.

Of course you could have. You know everything....

Regardless of coaching when you turned his college tape on his ability stood out. And anybody who truly went back and watched and studied this team would have never questioned his ability. I'm just calling it like I see it.

Dick move. He was weak in college. Everybody saw it. If you didn't, that's on you. Scouting report says so. Did he improve? Of course-- he got ACTUAL coaching. Amazing what happens when you have professional coaches concerned with developing their players. Don't get snippy with me because I point out glaring holes in our previous coaching staffs.

I'm sorry I shouldn't have went there. I just know that I was ridiculed on here last season when I said Cosmi should have been a first round pick. I knew what I saw on the tape. It's proving now that he absolutely had first round talent even though he got drafted in the second round.

You weren't ridiculed on here. Nobody REALLY ridicules anyone here. Do we have spirited debates? Yes, but the minute you start taking that sh!t personally is when it become no fun anymore. Do we bust each other's balls some? Uh, ya. That's part of the point of this.

At the time, pretty much everyone saw Cosmi was talented BUT he wasn't coming anywhere close to reaching said potential. After a decade plus of watching some "talented" players come in on the Line and rarely live up to expectations, folks in here started getting jaded. Same sh!t, different day. It wears you down-- you SEE how good these kids COULD be, and then they never get there.

Cosmi had flashes-- you know it, everybody saw it. But then when it came down to brass tacks, he wasn't living up to his potential. Why? Coaches and entitlement. And after seeing prospect after prospect just fade away, most of us expected Cosmi to do the same--

BUT---- an NFL team saw through his glaring weaknesses and said "you know what, that kid has something-- if only someone will bring it out of him..... I can do that for him"--- and they drafted him.
Now, all those blemishes that people like myself saw, are being corrected. And all that potential that you saw us now being fed. He had his "course corrected" by a good coach-- which is what we all wanted for him in the beginning, back when we saw those flashes of potential.

Now, I can't give much more of a concise and condensed version of what transpired with Cosmi... does this make more sense now? We are ALL happy for the kid. But he was no where NEAR reaching his potential while he was here.

And I agree with everything you said there. I'm just saying I was a lot higher on him than most were on this board. I think his overall play was kind of overshadowed due to rest of the line not being very good as a unit. And I agree with you 100% on the coaching being a big factor. I just know when I went back and watched the games like I usually do that I saw a guy that I believed was a first round pick.

Every year for the last 15 years I go through and do a breakdown on what I believe are the top 100 draft prospects for that year. I had Cosmi as my 4th best overall offensive line prospect. The 3 guys I had ahead of him were studs to. Rashawn Slater, Penei Sewell, and Alijah Vera-Tucker. I am by no means an expert but I just do it out of fun every year because I love football and studying the game. And i'm wrong all the time so that's not really saying much.

I hope with the addition of Kyle Flood we can reverse the trend of not developing guys and getting them ready for the next level. Them and the defensive line are going to be so important for us going into the SEC.

If his ability stood out on tape and you match that with his athletic ability then no way in hell he's the 11th OL taken. He was poor too many times in college. Graded poorly too many times in college.

Guys slip in the draft all the time. There were probably a handful of teams that had a first round grade on him but didn't need an OT. Just because a team drafted him at pick 51 doesn't mean that's where they had him graded.

This happens literally every single year in the draft. Just because one team has 10 guys graded higher than him doesn't mean the other 31 have him as the 11th best tackle on their board. Draft rankings are as subjective as they come.

And so, go back to the link posted above that showed his poor grades.

I don't know what you want to hear man. He was an underperformer at Texas. He is/was way too gifted athletically to not dominate every single snap in every single game. He didn't. He showed flashes. Not consistent. Lots of games he graded very poorly. Some games he graded very highly.

Furthermore, sometimes teams reach for a pick because a position is getting thinner. For example, when 1 of every 5 picks is in one position group, a team may take a player higher than normal.

So again...be pissed at the guy that was paid a million bucks a year to fix the OL and didn't.

And I'm not denying that he underperformed while he was here. I'm just saying I saw a lot of raw potential in him, and thought a lot more of him than most people is all. It's literally nothing more than that.
