So many clues....

Ok...2016 recruiting is in the books. Here is what we know. CS and staff can flat out recruit and do so from a weak position. This staff may understand modern recruiting better than any in the country. I love seeing that Daniels said.."if you dont want to go to Texas dont let Coach Strong on your couch"...Evidence this is true is Fowler who was adamant about no more in homes.

Madcow, swVA are spot on when they say if we dont win it doesnt mean anything....Here is the start of the first clues.We know Strong can evaluate talent. He picked too many under ranked guys up and had them producing last year. We know Strong can coach guys up...he has put too many guys in the NFL to dispute this. Ok...so he can pick the talent....he can coach up the talent....how can winning be far behind? Perhaps his biggest minus as a coach has been a big positive in his character He has loyal to a fault..So many team tried negative recruiting against us...that backfired. What negative recruiting pitch could they use?....that CS would be gone after this year. If he doesnt win, that could be true. If on the other hand, if he starts winning and winning big I dont even think the great satan could out recruit him.

OK...he can get talent...he can coach talent, now we get the biggest boost of all....these guys will play as hard for CS as they ever played for anyone. They will come out with their hair on fire....look at how they all piled on from a recruiting aspect!

It all comes down to winning now...I think the minemum wins for this thing to start taking off is 8. With 9 we really start rolling....with 10....oh my!..This is no easy task, and the odds are against us, but man!...I have hope I have not felt in a while. We need one of those full ride QB's to grab this opportunity by the throat and lead us to glory!

One more thing....we now have student athletes. Have we lost any player to grades the last 2 years? If not, no damned wonder CS gets the Moms and Dads on his side.

I wish I could agree with you in all that but here are my thoughts

1. Charlie can recruit, there is no disputing this.
2. Charlie can find diamonds in the rough and turn them into NFL talent.
3. Charlie can make a boy into a man
4. Charlie knows defense

BUT

1. Charlie doesn't know offensive football to save his life
2. Everyone of his original staff is now gone on that side of the ball. (Unheard of for a coach starting his 3rd season at a school)
3. Everything is riding on a OC that has never been an OC at this level anywhere.
4. We still don't have a QB and our oline is still a bit suspect. I might also say our WRs are also an unknown simply because our QB has been so bad of late we still don't know what we have.

In many ways I trust Charlie Strong, I love the program he is building, but this man is still playing with the odds out of his favor. He needs for the new OC to be a homerun hire, he needs a QB to emerge from the 5 guys we have in spring practice.


I'm going to be a happy camper if we get to 9 wins next year. That is 8 in the regular season and win our bowl game. And we sure as hell better not have any more blowouts.

Son....I absolutely agree with what you say. It all depends on the W's.

I also agree that CS has shortcomings:

1. All he knows about offense is that he cant coach it
2. His clock management and game management are not the best
3.He hasnt shown great ability at halftime adjustments.

My hope.....and what I am pinning my hopes on are that he will turn the offense over to his new OC. I posted my "clues" for the future and I hope he gets it right this year. If not, it wont matter much anyway.

As a Texas fan,I hope Charlie Strong does well but also know TCU,Baylor,Ou had good classes also. I like Patterson's quote on recruits "they are all Paper Tigers at the moment".I feel Charlie will need 4 or 5 years to get his program really up and running and to have enough depth to overcome injuries that will happen.I think the Texas adm understands this but not sure if Texas fans and Big Money donors do.

We are all coming off the incredible high of the recruiting process. However, everytime I look at the schedule next year I struggle to get beyond 8 wins and a bowl game. QB is the biggest issue. Personally, I hope the new OC lights the Jerrod Heard second year fire.
I think we may not win 8 if it either Kai or Shane is the guy. I want Shane to redshirt no matter what. We are also hampered by the Notre Dame game coming first. (Note to self always schedule a non-Power 5 first.)
I also would hope that our administration could stand behind Charlie with a 2017 season no matter what. Unfortunately, I still feel we have far too many "Ides of March" scenarios. I can't help to think that so many of the negative recruiting stories about us were internally generated. Charlie may have handed the next coach a very full bucket to work with in the future. Unlike what he was handed....
