the players can get over it. if the players like you too much, it's a red flag. sorry if you don't understand why. also, i've seen Texas play defense with Todd Orlando in charge, and I've seen Texas play special teams with Traylor in charge-- forgive me if i pick orlando 14 times a day and 15 on sunday. as for dykes, he fits the mold. they want offense first guys there apparently, and i get it-- at mid-majors that's probably the smart thing to do because you can scheme and trick somebody on offense if you have slightly less talent, but that's harder on defense. boise state model i suppose.
