Texas head coach Charlie Strong is not going to let defensive line coach Brick Haley leave Austin without a fight.
Haley met with Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and defensive coordinator John Chavis over the weekend. The Texas A&M coaches are trying to lure Haley away from Texas, and he received a contract offer from the Aggies this weekend.
However, Strong matched Haley’s salary offer during their meeting on Monday, according to my sources. I do not have the specific amount of money Haley was offered, but from what I was told, it was barely more than he currently makes at Texas. In other words, the Texas A&M offer was technically more money, but the amount was small enough for Texas to match without any problems.
Considering money is not an issue, Haley must decide if he wants to continue working for Strong or be reunited with Chavis, who is his close friend. Chavis and Haley worked together at LSU, and from what I have been told, they have a very close bond. He has the opportunity to be reunited with his friend in College Station.
Haley is currently deciding his next move.
If Haley remains on Strong’s staff, Strong will be able to retain a recruiter who had a lot of success in Louisiana this year. He successfully obtained four players from Louisiana in this year’s signing day class, and was the lead recruiter on Peyton Aucoin (TE), D’Andre Christmas-Giles (DT), Reggie Hemphill-Mapps (WR), Malcolm Roach (DE) and Gerald Wilbon (DT). Haley will have a very talented defensive line to work with if he remains in Austin.
Nevertheless, if Haley does leave, Strong will continue his hiring coaches this off-season. Texas officially hired receivers coach Charlie Williams on Monday, plus running backs coach Anthony Johnson on Saturday. Strong is expected to replace former defensive backs coach Chris Vaughn this week.
