A source close to Sonny Cumbie told the American-Statesman on Monday that TCU’s co-offensive coordinator is interested in coming to Texas as the Longhorns’ offensive coordinator.

Texas does not have an opening, but that’s expected to change after Saturday, which is likely to be receivers coach Jay Norvell’s final game as play-caller. Norvell, hired this past offseason from Oklahoma, took over play-calling duties in week two for the demoted Shawn Watson.

Asked Monday if he had spoken with Cumbie, Strong said, “No, I haven’t. The only thing I’ve focused on is our staff.” Earlier in the day, the website Orangebloods.com reported that Cumbie is Strong’s top target.

At TCU, Cumbie defers to fellow co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, so Texas’ position would be an advancement in title. However, TCU may try to hold onto Cumbie if Meacham leaves for another job. According to multiple reports, Meacham is a finalist to be North Texas’ head coach along with North Carolina offensive assistant Seth Littrell.

Cumbie, 34, is from Snyder and played quarterback at Texas Tech and was an assistant with the Red Raiders from 2009-13 before joining forces with Meacham to install the Air Raid at TCU.

Cumbie, who coaches TCU’s quarterbacks, is credited with the development of Trevone Boykin, who has been among the nation’s top passers the past two years.
